Ever since TLJ came out, there's been a reemergence of discussions about the light side, the dark side and the balance between them. Some claim the ST is retconning the established lore, some say the dark side is a cancer on the Force, the imbalance itself.
In order to keep the discussion clean, I wanted to share a couple of quotes regarding the balance between the light and dark from George Lucas himself. They are his comments taken throughout the years, from the 80s to 2011-ish, showing a consistency of the concept in his mind. I hope they'll reveal the true nature of the balance of the Force in the eyes of the creator himself.
"The overriding philosophy in Episode I—and in all the Star Wars movies, for that matter—is the balance between good and evil." -George Lucas, quoted in L. Bouzereau, Star Wars: The Making of Episode I, 1999
"In each of us we to have balance these emotions, and in the Star Wars saga the most important point is balance, balance between everything." -George Lucas, Time Magazine article, 2002
"The idea of positive and negative, that there are two sides to an entity, a push and a pull, a yin and a yang, and the struggle between the two sides are issues of nature that I wanted to include in the film." -George Lucas, quoted in L. Bouzereau, Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays
"The Force has two sides - [Light and Dark]. It is not a[n inherently] malevolent or a benevolent thing. It has a bad side to it, involving hate and fear, and it has a good side, involving love, charity, fairness and hope." -George Lucas, Times Magazine, 1980
"I wanted to have this mythological footing because I was basing the films on the idea that the Force has two sides, the good side, the evil side, and they both need to be there. Most religions are built on that, whether it's called yin and yang, God and the devil—everything is built on the push-pull tension created by two sides of the equation. The one below has been often quoted as a Word of God regarding the Dark Side being a cancer of the Force. It's important to note, that it's misinterpreted. George comments here on the Sith and their relationship with the Force and each other, comparing it to a cancerous relationship.
It says nothing about the Dark Side itself - just people who embrace it completely and discard the light.
"So the idea of temptation is one of the things we struggle against, and the temptation obviously is the temptation to go to the dark side. One of the themes throughout the films is that the Sith lords, when they started out thousands of years ago, embraced the dark side.
They were greedy and self-centered and they all wanted to take over, so they killed each other. Eventually, there was only one left, and that one took on an apprentice. And for thousands of years, the master would teach the apprentice, the master would die, the apprentice would then teach another apprentice, become the master, and so on.
But there could never be any more than two of them, because if there were, they would try to get rid of the leader, which is exactly what Vader was trying to do, and that's exactly what the Emperor was trying to do. The Emperor was trying to get rid of Vader, and Vader was trying to get rid of the Emperor.
And that is the antithesis of a symbiotic relationship, in which if you do that, you become cancer, and you eventually kill the host, and everything dies." -George Lucas, TIME magazine, April 26, 1999
And finally, a very important quote from the Mortis arc of the Clone Wars cartoon, in which George was hugely involved:
"It is only here that I can control them. A family in balance. The light and the dark. Day with night. Destruction, replaced by creation...Too much light or dark would be the undoing of life as you understand it."
You may call it the final words of George Lucas on the nature of the Force - and I believe its consistent with everything we've seen since 1977.
Il est clairement dit que le Côté Obscur n'est pas le déséquilibre, et à ce niveau là les épisodes VII et VIII sont cohérents, surtout dans ce que raconte Luke à Rey dans TLJ lorsqu'il lui fait ressentir la Force.
Lucas dit même: "La Force a deux côtés - [Lumière et Ténèbres]. Ce n'est pas une chose
malveillante ou bienveillante."
Ce qui est intéressant dans ces citations, c'est que l'on peut même se poser la question si les Jedi de la Prélogie ne déséquilibraient pas la Force également (en plus des Sith), car Lucas dit ceci:
"La philosophie qui prédomine dans l'épisode I, et dans tous les films de Star Wars , est l'équilibre entre le bien et le mal ."
"Dans chacun de nous, nous devons équilibrer ces émotions et, dans la saga Star Wars , le point le plus important est l'équilibre, l'équilibre entre toutes choses."
Les Jedi sont loin d'établir cet équilibre spirituel sur eux même dans la Prélogie (à part Qui-Gon), au contraire, ils rejettent systématiquement les émotions négatives, alors que Lucas explique qu'il faut "équilibrer ces émotions".
Les Sith déséquilibrent également la Force en libérant à l'extrême des émotions négatives et en rejetant les positives, ils se laissent consumer par le CO.
Luke et surtout Anakin via son "retour" du CO incarnaient l'acceptation des sentiments positifs et négatifs dans une sorte d'équilibre à la fin de ROTJ.
Cependant, nous avons toujours beaucoup de questions sans réponse par rapport à cette prophétie.
La Postlogie a introduit 2 personnages intéressants, car là où l'Ordre Jedi et l'Ordre Sith incarnaient respectivement le bien et le mal dans leurs extrêmes, ici nous avons Rey et Kylo Ren qui incarnent la Lumière et l'Obscurité de façon nuancée. Rey arrive à éprouver des émotions négatives (comme la colère), et Kylo arrive a éprouver des émotions positives (comme de la compassion), ça fait parti d'eux mêmes.
Ni l'un ni l'autre ne rentrent vraiment dans les codes des anciens Ordres Jedi et Sith, et bien évidemment ils sont des héritiers d'Anakin, Kylo par le sang, et Rey spirituellement en ayant obtenu le sabre d'Anakin (en attendant la révélation sur sa véritable origine...).
Pour Anakin, Pablo Hidalgo a répondu ceci à une personne qui lui demandait si Anakin était toujours l'élu:
"If you mean mentioned-in-Jedi-prophecy-to-bring-an-end-to-the-Sith-bring-balance-and-wrap-up-Episodes-I-through-VI, then yep. Anakin was."
=> "Anakin l'était".
Le rôle d'Anakin est terminé, l'enjeu à présent est le fait de maintenir l'équilibre grâce à ses héritiers: Rey et Kylo.
L'histoire après ROTJ n'était pas réellement terminé, car les 2 côtés de la Force devaient renaître sous une nouvelle forme après la purge d'Anakin, et comme Lucas l'explique, l'équilibre ne consistait pas en la destruction du CO, la Force est constituée de 2 côtés ne pouvant exister l'un sans l'autre, et TLJ met encore une fois l'accent sur ce fait préétabli par Lucas lui même.
Voici la véritable question que pose la Postlo: Comment faire renaître les 2 côtés de la Force sans corrompre l'équilibre ?
L'histoire de Luke démontre que ce n'était pas si évident, et cet échec était nécessaire à l'histoire. Pourquoi ?
Parce qu'il fallait montrer en quoi le fait de faire renaître l'Ordre Jedi allait faire inévitablement renaître en parallèle le Côté Obscur. L’existence de l'Ordre Jedi seul n'était plus compatible avec l'équilibre dans la Force, voilà pourquoi Luke s'est planté: il a cru pouvoir faire renaître la Lumière tout en tentant d’empêcher la renaissance du Côté Obscur qui est apparu chez Ben, cela a conduit à la destruction de son Ordre Jedi.
Au final, Rey et Kylo sont les véritables représentant de la renaissance de la Lumière et de l'Obscurité, c'est leur rôle (tout comme Anakin avait le sien) ils sont la clé de comment les 2 côtés de la Force vont renaître sans corrompre l'équilibre, et ils devront affronter tout ce qui met en péril cet équilibre.
En gros, ils sont complémentaire à Anakin.
Pour finir, le retour de Sidious ne signifie pas fondamentalement que l'équilibre va être perdu, mais qu'il risque de l'être, connaissant les ambitions qu'il avait par le passé et ce dont il a été capable.
