New Characters Join the Galaxy Far, Far Away as Part of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort

Reservations are now open for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, the first-of-its-kind, two-night immersive vacation experience in a galaxy far, far away. Debuting March 1, 2022, at Walt Disney World Resort, this Star Wars adventure will make you the hero of your own story as you tour the galaxy aboard the glamorous Halcyon starcruiser.

Throughout your voyage, you’ll see, feel and live Star Wars, which includes the possibility of meeting heroes of the Resistance like Rey and Chewbacca, or encountering the malevolent Kylo Ren of the First Order. But the starcruiser also brings with it a host of characters new to the Star Wars galaxy, created especially for this experience.

Let’s meet a few of them for the first time!

Image

Captain Riyola Keevan

Charismatic, respected and trustworthy, Captain Keevan will lead your voyage aboard the Halcyon starcruiser. She is a strong and decisive leader, endearing herself to both her crew and her passengers by being fair to all and cool under pressure – a skill she’s learned from her … “adventurous” history. You’ll likely find the captain on the ship’s bridge – and you’d be wise to listen carefully and follow her instructions.

Image

Cruise Director Lenka Mok

There is much fun to be had aboard the starcruiser, and Lenka Mok is your go-to crew member to discover it all. As the captain’s right hand, Mok is in charge of onboard entertainment, so it’s her job to make sure your voyage is an adventure. An optimistic and joyful soul, Mok’s happiness is derived from yours, so this is definitely someone you’ll want to meet!

Image

SK-62O

This astromech droid is Mok’s assistant cruise director, ensuring things run smoothly and on time. He keeps an eye on all the workings of the ship and is devoted to Mok and Captain Keevan. And while he loves to have fun with guests, he’s also good in a pinch if anything should go awry (one of his many hidden talents).

Image

Sammie the Mechanic

Sammie’s proficiency as the ship’s new mechanic is actually not his most endearing feature. His enthusiasm and good-natured personality quickly won over the starcruiser’s crew and that makes him popular among guests who happen across his path. He’s clearly eager to prove himself on such a well-appointed vessel, and his tasks always seem to get done … somehow.

Image

D3-O9

D3-O9 is another droid you may see appear on viewscreens onboard the Halcyon starcruiser. Her primary responsibility is running ship logistics, so she certainly knows everyone and everything happening onboard during a voyage. But her favorite part of the job is talking with passengers. Built centuries ago by Chandrila Star Line’s founder, D3 has seen the ship’s history – and the entire galaxy – evolve, and she’s not shy about sharing her knowledge and opinions with passengers.

Image

First Order Lt. Harman Croy

While the Halcyon starcruiser is a pleasure vessel, this is a stormy time in the galaxy as battles rage between the First Order and the Resistance – and it’s often impossible to avoid the conflict. The ambitious and intimidating Lt. Croy is on special assignment to root out and expose any Resistance fighters who are rumored to be aboard the ship. Will you help him? Will you support the Resistance? Will you just sit back and see how the whole thing plays out? The choice is yours.

STOWAWAY ON A TEST FLIGHT FOR STAR WARS: GALACTIC STARCRUISER

STARWARS.COM CLIMBS ABOARD THE NEW IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE FOR A GLIMPSE AT WHAT’S TO COME WHEN YOU BOOK PASSAGE ON THE CHANDRILA STAR LINE.

The lightsaber jumps to life in my hands, illuminating a sense of purpose with its gentle hum. At first, the training droid goes slow, telegraphing the path of each simulated blast to give me time to deflect, then intensifying with speed.

But the real question is: can I do it with the equivalent of a blast shield over my eyes? My trainer, Disney Imagineer Sara Thacher, assures me I am strong with the Force, and the other passengers aboard Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser gather behind me, shields at the ready to protect themselves should I fail. Then I calm my mind and just breathe.

My body remembers the lightsaber forms in a mix of muscle memory and, perhaps, the Force itself as instinct. With a glimmer of foresight, I can see what’s coming before the training droid fires, feeling the jolt of each successful defensive move as the hilt vibrates in my hands.

Image

When I boarded the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser for an abbreviated play test last week, I expected to choose between the First Order and aiding the Resistance — although the General Leia shirt I chose for the day tips my hand in terms of allegiance. But I never expected to feel like Luke Skywalker himself, taking my first steps into a larger world with the Force as my guide. That’s the magic of the new immersive two-day experience opening at Walt Disney World Resort in March 2022. If you’ve boarded a cruise ship or touched down on Black Spire Outpost, you have a sense of what to expect. But the reality is a unique, personalized adventure that takes you on a journey into a reality all its own as a passenger aboard the Halcyon starcruiser.

This artist concept rendering shows the Galactic Starcruiser Terminal at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., where guests will arrive for their two-night vacation at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, opening in 2022.

Protect the Wookiee

The terminal that welcomes you from the outside world is a non-descript earthy bunker, a portal of gray stone that seems to blend in with its surroundings. But the minute you step into the Launch Pod? That all changes. Through a viewport on the ceiling you’ll see yourself hurtling toward the sky, beyond the clouds, and to the stars where the Halcyon starcruiser awaits its next group of passengers. The play tests allow Imagineers a chance to see how an audience responds to the project, with a quick tour to give visitors on this trek an overview of the massive space before we’re pulled into the action.

The central atrium connects to the main bridge, a plush oasis with red velvet benches. In one corner, a hologram emits the ship’s logo, a simple circle with two slash marks bisecting the continuous line. Although signs of construction lingered during my visit, the effect of earthly displacement was still palpable. Gazing out the main viewport at the planet below, ships buzzing around nearby undoubtedly gathering other passengers, is quite a sight. Then you begin to feel the gentle tug of motion. The stars outside pass by as the ship begins its journey. And even though you know your eyes can deceive you, you would swear you’re moving through space.

The ship’s 100 passenger cabins form the spine of the ship, accessible from the four decks that are designated for passengers. The rest of the 13 decks are for crew members only — unless, of course, you can talk your way into a special mission as a new Resistance recruit. The bunks appear small in photos, but a six-foot-tall passenger can comfortably lie down in one of the capsule-like sleeping quarters. On an opposite wall, a standard double bed is bolted to the wall, with space for luggage to be stowed beneath and a simple table with two stools below the viewport, an ever-changing view of the stars with a blast shield that can be lowered when it’s time to rest.

Guests experiencing Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser – opening in 2022 at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – will have fantastic meals in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, seen in this artist concept rendering. The enticing supper club is a bright and welcoming hall offering menus of both otherworldly and familiar origins. One night’s dinner will feature a live performance from a galactic superstar.

Image

Guests can enjoy the Sublight Lounge as part of their stay aboard Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, the first-of-its-kind vacation experience debuting March 1, 2022, at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

On a quick tour, we glimpse the lightsaber training room, the brig, and get directions to a climate simulator, a courtyard where you can begin to acclimate to the weather conditions at the ship’s first port of Batuu. The dining hall looks almost exactly like the concept art, with more velvet seating in plush blue-green, gold accents, and stunning lighting fixtures that look like something straight out of the glittering world of Canto Bight. When we duck our heads into the Sublight Lounge, it feels like we’ve stepped foot onto a more relaxed version of Dryden Vos’ luxury yacht. In one corner a working holotable sits ready for a friendly game of sabacc while behind the bar swirling carafes of colorful beverages are ready for sipping.

Then it’s time for muster.

On this particular day, to the crowd in the atrium the ship’s captain, Riyola Keevan, appears human, although her kind eyes shine through. She carries herself like someone who would be willing to protect her ship and the people aboard at all costs. Assistant cruise director SK-62O whizzes by, an astromech on a mission. And the First Order is already making its presence known, as Lt. Croy and two stormtroopers pace around taking part in light interrogation techniques.

Image

Guests will step into a bustling atrium when they arrive aboard Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, the first-of-its-kind vacation experience debuting March 1, 2022, at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

There’s so much activity that my eyes don’t know where to focus until I see a familiar swatch of brown concealed behind a support beam on the deck just above. Chewbacca has arrived, taking refuge as a stowaway. When he opens his mouth, a cacophony of Wookiee howls and chortles emits from his safely masked features. Word quickly begins to spread that we must help hide Chewie from the First Order, and I spring to action, stretching my arms out as nonchalantly as possible to extend my five-foot-five frame while the Wookiee tries to make himself small behind a wall of like-minded passengers. Working together, we manage to sneak him out of the atrium while another guest distracts the First Order with questions. And safely in a corridor we learn the language of the Resistance, a passcode that will help identify others along our journey. “Ignite the spark,” the captain says, and we respond in unison, “light the fire.”

Battle stations

Bridge training is next on the itinerary, a team sport that requires passengers of all ages to belly-up to a console and learn how to operate the shields, loader systems, and weapons in case of an emergency. My partner and I quickly become competitive even during the training exercise, taking the potential for a life-or-death situation very seriously.

It’s lucky we do, because the practice is interrupted by a First Order blockade, calling for an intervention by all those present.

Image

Guests will learn the workings of the bridge aboard Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, the first-of-its-kind vacation experience debuting March 1, 2022, at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

We use our recently acquired skills to blast our way out of there and make the jump to hyperspace. It’s an unexpectedly awe-inspiring feeling to be standing on the bridge of a starcruiser when it makes that leap into the starry abyss. Even if you’ve experienced it second-hand in a movie theater or even first-hand safely strapped in on Star Tours or Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, neither can adequately prepare you for this moment. The blue streaks of hyperspace whiz by, reflected on your face as you stare up at them from the bridge. There’s no question that you are in the story, living out all your dreams of stepping into the Star Wars galaxy.

After a successful mission to send a message on a Resistance relay, despite an impossibly dangerous asteroid field and a nefarious First Order Probe Droid that sends us all ducking our heads below the console to avoid detection, it’s time to return from where we came. But the First Order is waiting, and the paramilitary group swiftly takes over, escorting us from the bridge.

“At Disney, so often you’re used to seeing massive scale, yet this is an incredibly intimate experience,” says Ann Morrow Johnson, the Disney Imagineer who serves as executive producer and creative director of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. “There are only 100 cabins and we’ve got lots of characters onboard the ship. And because we want it to feel like that elevated intimate experience where you really get to connect with the characters onboard, you have that personalized service from the crew members. You feel like this is an adventure that is happening to all of you as a community. This whole adventure is kind of befalling you together over the course of those two days.”

Engineering deck

Our next assignment takes us into the bowels of the ship to manage the engineering systems in an effort to prevent Lt. Croy from taking control. The room feels like an Earth-bound boiler room, with additional lights, levers, and buttons. As my eyes adjust to the dimly lit room and I try to figure out what to tackle first, a crew member thrusts a hydrospanner into my hands and I get to work opening and closing some essential valves.

Faced with a series of puzzles just waiting to be solved, we move around the room comforted by the thrum of the engines and the occasional puff of smoke, turning angry red lights into serene white beacons with the right sequence of switches and levers.

In the coolant room, we learn to work together as some of the switches must be moved in unison at a distance too far for any human to reach. A young Jedi appears and, although I don’t catch his name, we wordlessly work together to throw the massive switches, resulting in a satisfying hiss, to keep things flowing. You can always trust a Jedi.

Guests will learn the ways of the Jedi during lightsaber training aboard Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, the first-of-its-kind vacation experience debuting March 1, 2022, at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

One with the Force

Afterward, my group is sent to the lightsaber training room.

At first, we all take turns using the practice sabers to deflect the training droid’s blaster fire, our small group cheering each other on. As the lightsaber ignites the hilt vibrates, coming alive with a shaft of light to be used only for defense. The weapon feels surprisingly light in my hands.

When the training droid intensifies the exercise, sending bolts firing off more rapidly in all directions, we’re handed special deflecting shields. Using the same lightsaber forms, the shields quickly become invaluable tools to protect those who are unarmed at the back of the room.

After some success, it’s my big mouth that results in the final test: deflecting simulated blasts using only the Force. I’m so confident and vocal that the trainer plucks me out of the crowd to demonstrate for the rest of the class, and for a moment I wonder: what have I done?

This is how I end up with the rest of the team gathered behind me, shields up and at the ready should I fail. I don’t know if I say it out loud or if the words simply echo in my mind, but with this reminder I raise my weapon: “I am one with the Force…and the Force is with me.”

31 THINGS WE LEARNED IN AN EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW OF STAR WARS: GALACTIC STARCRUISER

NEW FOOD, CHARACTERS, AND MERCHANDISE HELP BRING THIS IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE TO LIFE.

When you board Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, the transformative two-day immersive experience will be unlike anything you’ve experienced before. A spread of galactic cuisine will take you on a culinary tour of the stars, with dishes inspired by Star Wars planets. A boutique provides opportunities to dress the part, including some garments inspired by the Star Wars films and modeled after actual costumes plucked from the Skywalker Ranch archive. And whether your journey takes you to the underworld, turns you into a recruit for the Resistance, or has you sympathizing with the First Order, you can be sure it will be a wholly unique experience complete with the chance to train with a lightsaber.

StarWars.com recently visited Walt Disney World Resort for an early look at all things Star Wars: Galactic Starcuiser. Here are 31 fun facts and tidbits we learned during our stay.

Image

1. You’ll get to live out your dreams of lightsaber training.

There have been other opportunities to wield the weapon of the Jedi, building a unique blade inside Savi’s Workshop or procuring replicas of those carried by some of the most famous Jedi and Sith. But it’s a different beast when you’re tasked with not only igniting the blade but learning to use it for defense.

2. It’s definitely not a hotel.

During an exclusive press panel, both Scott Trowbridge, portfolio creative executive, Walt Disney Imagineering, and Elizabeth Mullins, vice president of Hotels and Resorts for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, noted that even though you’ll presumably sleep in the appointed cabin during your two-day immersive experience inside Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, they’re not calling it a hotel and for good reason. “It’s easy for me to say it’s not a hotel, but it takes a little bit more conversation to describe really what it is and what our guests are going to be able to experience,” Trowbridge says. In 50 years of Disney Parks and Resorts in Florida, the Starcruiser is truly the first of its kind. “It is unlike anything that anyone has ever done before,” he adds. “And I think it is very exciting because it’s actually very much in keeping with Imagineering and Lucasfilm to invent new ways of delivering experiences, new ways of telling stories. This is absolutely a next step in innovation of how immersive we can be.”

In the words of Ann Morrow Johnson, executive producer and creative director for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, it’s a piece of immersive theater, coupled with a signature dining experience, and select elements of a standard cruise. “We’re developing a thing that hasn’t been done before, at least not at this kind of scale and not this kind of level,” adds Trowbridge. “I think that’s consistent with the kind of innovation we’re always striving to do to find ways to create these experiences and bring our guests closer to the stories and characters we care about.”

Image

3. The inside of the ship is most impressive, but so is what’s happening outside.

For the tailored experience, designers created the Halcyon starcruiser from the ground up, including the massive starfield and passing ships viewable outside any viewport onboard.

“We’ve built a galaxy,” says Sara Thacher, the senior R&D Imagineer with Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development.

4. Chewbacca and other familiar faces will join you onboard.

The towering Wookiee and other legacy characters make an appearance during the two-day immersive excursion, including Rey. And Trowbridge says there are other known characters that have yet to be revealed.

5. If things go wrong, you’ll come face-to-mask with the fearsome Kylo Ren.

Taking place between the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the cruise inhabits a pocket of time when the Resistance is still rebuilding itself to defend the galaxy against the First Order threat.

6. The story onboard the experience connects directly to events unfolding inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Trowbridge notes that participants will get a deeper understanding of the backstory of the coaxium heist at the heart of Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and the heart-pounding evacuation of Batuu’s Resistance base in Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

Image

7. The Halcyon starcruiser will be helmed by Captain Riyola Keevan.

The experience introduces a bevy of new faces and droids, including the Resistance sympathizer who commands your cruise vessel, Captain Riyola Keevan. But you alone will get to choose your allegiance. “Because we’re spending two days, two nights with this story, living our Star Wars adventure on this voyage, it means that the story unfolds and we’re actually able to develop relationships, explore all of that depth [in] these characters,” says Thacher.

8. It’s a playful experience, so it’s okay to explore your dark side.

“I have to respectfully reject the framework of good and evil here,” says Trowbridge. “At the end of the day, though, this is an epic Star Wars-level story where major things, including lives, are at stake. We’re going to play that. We’re going to present that as part of this story.” That means even if you usually inhabit a pretty average, mild-mannered story in your daily life, here you can dabble in smuggling, or even join the First Order. No judgement.

9. Invitations to help Resistance, crew, and the First Order abound.

Among the areas that passengers can play along will be stories of Resistance, the underworld, the Force, the First Order, and the locals. “It’s a series of invitations to engage,” Trowbridge notes, “never an obligation. It’s like building the most epic Star Wars playset.”

Image

10. The datapad available to add depth to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will continue to play a role in the Starcruiser experience.

“Are you going to help the First Order?” asks Anisha Deshmane, assistant producer, Walt Disney Imagineering. “Are you going to sell out Chewbacca?” The choice is yours.

11. Couching the experience in a starship cruise was the eureka moment.

Disney Imagineers began thinking about an immersive Star Wars experience as they were planning Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge six years ago, but it wasn’t immediately clear how they would meld the luxury of a themed Disney hotel with the playability of the Parks. When someone suggested they model the experience after the Disney Cruise Line, with a planned itinerary, experiences, excursions, and luxurious fine dining, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser snapped into focus.

Image

12. The choices you make will impact your adventure.

With between 100-500 passengers onboard, the immersion calls for contained chaos and a sense of community as individuals live out their own stories making decisions that impact the experience as a whole. “It is this giant living ecosystem,” Johnson says. Only you can choose your destiny.

“And so there’s no world in which one person will see everything that happens on the ship at any one time,” she adds. “They’ll all eventually converge, but I think it’s a very satisfying conclusion.”

“Your choices matter. Your choices change what comes next for your story,” adds Thacher.

13. It’s Star Wars, so you can bet your credits that not everything is going to go according to plan.

The playability factor also means no two voyages will be alike. “You’re going to go on missions and depending on who you choose to meet or who you choose to help, you will actually see different stories in your scenes that will unfold differently,” Johnson says.

14. The journey is geared toward people of all ages and interest levels.

You don’t have to be a Star Wars expert to enjoy your stay, or plan ahead with a full cosplay ensemble. “There are levels and layers here. You can come in without knowing and without ever having heard of Star Wars and still have a great experience because everything you need is going to be inside this experience,” says Trowbridge. “And we really do mean all ages. We’re designing it for groups of friends, adults, kids, and multi-generational families who want to come and experience it together. Really, it’s all those different folks: people who are fans of Star Wars, people who are fans of Disney, people who want to try something new.”

“All you have to know is I’m going on vacation,” says Wendy Anderson, executive creative director for Disney Live Entertainment. That extends to the itinerary, with opportunities to be more of an observer to the story that unfolds or a participant who slices into a datapad or terminal and convinces a crew member to give them a special mission. But if you miss a story point while taking a nap in your cabin, there’s no replay. “Time passes on the Halcyon,” Johnson notes.

Image

15. The chefs have scoured the Star Wars galaxy for the all-inclusive menu.

For a “taste around the galaxy,” a Mustafar-inspired bread service with nitrogen accents is among the culinary delicacies that have taken cues from Star Wars storytelling. There’s also a delightful blue bantha butter and more adventurous options like blue shrimp from the planet of Felucia that will arrive smoking, a complexity that’s a feast for the senses; diners smell the dish before tasting it.

Dishes appear vaguely familiar yet are nothing like you’ve experienced before — even inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. “This is the high end. This is the ultimate in Star Wars luxury,” says Trowbridge. “One of the things I love about how this team has approached this is the level of storytelling. [They] thought about what ingredients would be on board a space cruise ship. What is the fictional supply chain that leads to these dishes? I think that level of storytelling is just fantastic, that depth of immersion that we’re doing everywhere.”

16. One of the dishes comes alive.

You read that right. During a preview tasting, the garnish on a fish dish waved serenely from the plate. Chef John Prieto says the garnish is really a bonito flake, a dried fish delicacy he first encountered at a five-star restaurant on a visit to San Francisco, California. Another dish contained what appeared to be a baby octopus. Take a lesson from the Mandalorian — don’t play with your food.

Image

17. There’s something on the menu for everyone.

For those with less adventurous palettes and dietary restrictions, there are vegetarian substitutions and the standard chicken fingers, or tip yip, and fries.

18. The Crown of Corellia Dining Room is named for the world of Corellia.

In-universe, the planet is known for its industrial shipyards and the birthplaces of the Halcyon starcruiser, as well as the famed Millennium Falcon.

19. The sleeping pods are bigger than they look.

Some rooms come equipped with built-in bunk beds that are actually large enough to comfortably sleep a six-foot-tall adult. And Mullins says the team invented an all-new mattress just for those capsules.

Image

20. When you relax at the Sublight Lounge, you can grab a drink and play a game of sabacc.

More well-lit Crimson Dawn finery than dank Mos Eisley hive of scum and villainy, the lounge will include a brand-new menu of beverages including the Hoth Frost, the Mooja Twist, and other tasty delights. There’s also a working holotable for fans of sabacc. Just remember…no cheating.

21. If you need some air, the climate simulator has you covered.

If traveling through space has you feeling the need for fresh air, Johnson has just the thing. “This is the space that we have not talked a lot about. It’s really amazing technology from the Star Wars world,” she says with a wink. “We were able to exactly simulate the climate of the planet we’re visiting on your shore excursion. So in our case, that’s the planet of Batuu.” That means a courtyard with all the sunshine and humidity you can expect on the world, alongside plants collected from other planets where the Halcyon starcruiser has docked. “We’ve got a little garden out there and a simulated roof overhead that is even able to simulate the sky.”

22. A passenger excursion will be transported to an all-new entry point on Black Spire Outpost.

To maintain the illusion, visitors on the Galactic Starcruiser excursion won’t enter Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge through the main gates of the theme park. “There are locals at the planet,” Johnson says, “and we just ask that you respect their customs as we’re sure they will respect yours.” And creators say to expect some special surprises after touching down on Batuu.

Image

23. An onboard boutique will help you dress for the occasion, from headtails to toes.

Although passengers are welcome to come decked out in full cosplay from the moment they step foot into the Launch Pod, a ship’s boutique, The Chandrila Collection, will feature a variety of pieces that can be augmented with professional makeup artists. “We’re really focused on transformation and role play,” says Brad Schoeneberg, vice president, Brand Merchandising. “You get to live out a story here. Who do you want to be? Where are you from? We come up with your backstory. Let’s have some fun together.” That includes Disney Parks’ first-ever official head pieces, including Twi’lek headtails and a Togruta’s montrals, a piece that made Ahsoka Tano voice actor Ashley Eckstein squeal with delight when she first saw them. The pair are among the most unique products the company has produced for consumers, Schoeneberg notes.

24. Designers went into the Skywalker Ranch archive to get inspiration from the queen of Star Wars fashion: Padmé Amidala.

One particular cloak, seen above, is the result of careful collaboration and research, examining the screen-used garment worn by Padmé on Tatooine in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and designed by Trisha Biggar. “We really took the color inspiration from the original, the pattern from the original,” says Tracie Alt, senior merchandiser.

25. There’s also a deep-cut nod to Bail Organa’s loyal aide, Sateen Vestswe.

While they were perusing the archive, designers also pulled in Sateen Vestswe’s ensemble from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, including a forest-green jacket and an arm piece that was created by making a 3D digital scan of the original prop, which can be seen below. “Those touches of authenticity are there throughout the entire assortment,” Alt adds. And there’s also Princess Leia Organa’s classic white gown, from Star Wars: A New Hope, for fans of the original trilogy.

Image

26. You can change your appearance mid-trip.

Just like Finn, you can start out as a First Order stormtrooper and leave as a member of the Resistance. Or maybe peruse your personal cape closet to pay homage to style icon Lando Calrissian?

27. Beyond the screen-influenced pieces, designers took inspiration from the crew for apparel designs.

A pint-sized captain’s uniform — which doesn’t come in adult sizes (we asked) — a blue mechanic’s coveralls, and a tunic that resembles the gear worn by the lightsaber training staff will be for sale for younger passengers. For dinner with the captain, more formal attire indicative of galactic black tie can be purchased, including a sleek wrap dress with a cowl capable of special modifications and a crisp gray tunic with a greeblie accent on the lapel. And some more subtle nods and everyday options, in the form of a gray jacket and a black shirt inspired by Qi’ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story, will be available for a relaxed shore leave.

Image

28. Show your allegiance by wearing the ship’s logo.

There’s also an exclusive line of jewelry bearing the Halcyon logo subtly woven into bracelets, necklaces, and earrings for a high-fashion celebration of the experience. “Just like a cruise line, we have a ship logo [merchandise] line that really celebrates not only our Chandrila Star Line, but also our Halcyon ship,” says Schoeneberg.

Image

29. You can take a piece of the Halcyon starcruiser home…

The collection extends to home goods with wine glasses, coasters, a bottle stopper and other pieces to bring a touch of the Sublight Lounge’s ambience back home. Gold and silver accents give these unique pieces a touch of class, while the shapes are unmistakably Star Wars.

Image

30. …or the ship itself!

For fans who look at the Halcyon starcruiser the way Han gazes at the Millennium Falcon, a scaled replica model of the ship can serve as a reminder of your journey.

31. The experience is undergoing months of test flights before taking off on its maiden voyage.

For the past four months, a select few have been brought aboard Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser for play tests, abbreviated versions of the final experience that help Imagineers fine-tune how the new technology and recently-onboarded crew will interact with each new arrival of passengers.

“This is my favorite time,” says Thacher. “This moment of getting to see it come to life for the first time.” Trowbridge describes this as the final step in a composing a concerto. The piano’s been built and tuned, but the people behind the scenes are still figuring out the final piece.

Disney’s Josh D’Amaro Gives Sneak Peek of Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

Amid all the excitement and curiosity surrounding the forthcoming Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort, there’s one thing I’m looking forward to the most: lightsaber training.

When this first-of-its-kind vacation experience begins welcoming guests aboard the Halcyon starcruiser on March 1, 2022, they’ll finally know what it’s like to feel the Force and wield a lightsaber as they square off against a training remote, similar to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope. It’s one of the many immersive activities that comprise this two-night adventure where you’ll see, feel and live Star Wars.

This morning at Destination D23, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro gave us a sneak peek at this much-anticipated moment aboard the starcruiser. Let’s take our first step into a larger world and watch as Josh tests his skills with a lightsaber.

Image

Oh, wait … there was more? Yes, Josh also stopped by the starcruiser’s bridge, where Disney Imagineer Sara Thacher taught him how to defend the ship using some trusty blaster cannons. Guests will learn these skills, too, during their adventure … which may come in handy should anything unexpected happen. But nah, everything always goes according to plan in that galaxy far, far away, right?

This is just a taste of what’s to come for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, so keep checking back with us here at the Disney Parks Blog as we hurtle toward March 1 like we’re jumping to lightspeed.

So until next time, just remember … the Force will be with you, always.

-- Edit (Sam 20 Nov 2021 - 21:02) :

Disney World introduces new Star Wars character for epic Starcruiser experience: 'This is not a hotel!'

EW exclusively reveals Captain Keevan's role in a preview of the two-day Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser journey that weaves interconnected stories for multiple endings.

If you thought Galactic Starcruiser would be a mere Star Wars-themed resort, your expectations are light-years off.

"This is not a hotel," stresses Imagineering executive Scott Trowbridge, clarifying that the two-night interstellar affair (opening March 3 — at nearly $5,000 a stay — just outside Disney's Hollywood Studios park) is "part video game, live-action role-play, immersive theater, and luxury experience all rolled into one."

Unlike a traditional hotel where weary parkgoers retire to relax and sleep, Trowbridge says Starcruiser is a place to "live a Star Wars adventure" alongside characters and locales lifted from the beloved franchise's movies, books, comics, video games, and TV shows — with some new faces in the mix, including ship leader Captain Keevan (below).

"We'll learn a lot more about her and her role in some pretty iconic moments in Star Wars history," he teases, adding that she runs the ship with "capability and professionalism second to none." But, just like the experience around her, "there may be more to her than meets the eye."

Starcruiser guests will book "departure times" and sync up with a fleet of others, but you'll navigate the narrative differently "depending on the choices you make" along a "multi-threaded set of interlocking and interweaving stories," Trowbridge says. "You may choose to affiliate with a certain group of scoundrel-type folks, so the story will play out differently for you than it would for somebody who's decided to become an undercover Resistance operative."

You'll be permitted to visit Disney's parks, but you probably won't want to, as your performance in things like light saber combat practice and crew-style bridge training can impact where you land when the ship docks.

The number of possible outcomes for your voyage? "I suspect we could calculate that, but it hasn't been important to me to know what that number is, because it's a lot," he says. "What I hope is that our guests don't come to this with a feeling of there being a number of options."

Like the universe, it should feel infinite.

Perso, je veux rester optimiste, mais wait and see.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser – The Next Step In Immersive Storytelling

What does it mean that Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is a first-of-its-kind immersive experience?

Here to answer that question are three people who helped create this bold new adventure in a galaxy far, far away: Portfolio Creative Executive Scott Trowbridge and Creative Director Cory Rouse from Walt Disney Imagineering, and Mikhael Tara Garver, director of immersive experiences for this audacious project. Check out the new video below to hear them discuss the development of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser and what makes this vacation experience such a big leap forward in immersive storytelling.

Tout ce qu'il faut savoir sur l'expérience immersive Star Wars : Galactic Starcruiser à quelques jours de son lancement :

7 Burning Questions Answered About Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser voyages begin March 1, 2022, and given that it’s a first-of-its-kind experience, we understand if you have a lot of questions. This week, we cruised aboard the famed ship—and now we’re here to answer your burning questions.

1. Is Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser a hotel ?

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is not a hotel—it’s an entirely new vacation experience! It’s a two-night, immersive adventure where your choices impact an epic Star Wars story. There’s plenty to explore onboard the starcruiser with themed activities, accommodations, and more. Plus, you’ll visit Black Spire Outpost on Batuu during a daytime excursion to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Image

2. How does the role-playing aspect of the experience work ?

During your voyage, you won’t just meet new and familiar Star Wars characters—you’ll interact with them in ways you’ve only previously imagined. They need your help, and whether it’s through in-person conversations or private messages using your Star Wars: Datapad (via the Play Disney Parks mobile app), you can join them on daring missions. Remember: Characters you meet one day might lead to bold new adventures the next!

“Immersive theater is still relatively new to the industry, and I think Disney understands that not all guests have had the opportunity to experience it,” Alex Lee, Production Manager, Disney Live Entertainment, says. “We’ve created characters to help guide and inform how to play. This is very specific to [new character] Sandro Alimander, who’s there as a guest; he’s there as a window, so you can see how he interacts with the performers, how he’s interacting with you, and what the rules of engagement are that play through Sandro. Hopefully by seeing a unique character trying to participate and be part of this story, that inspires you as a guest to continue to play.”

3. Can I dress up in costume during my voyage ?

Definitely! What you wear is part of the fun. Since you are a character in the story, it’s important to dress the part. If you wish to participate, you can even show off your look during the Outer Rim Regalia event! Clothes from your home planet are also welcome. Exclusive apparel is available in advance from shopDisney. Galactic attire is also available for purchase at The Chandrila Collection, the Halcyon starcruiser’s boutique.

Many of the items you’ll find on shopDisney or in The Chandrila Collection were reproduced from Star Warsfilms. “My team and I spent so much time in the [Lucasfilm] archives,” Brad Schoeneberg, VP of Brand Merchandising, says. “We held and measured the original costumes, so we knew what they felt like, we knew the materials, we knew the fabrications. We produced the most realistic items imaginable. What those actors felt wearing those costumes should give you a little hint of what you’re going to feel here.”

Before you pack, please read over the Walt Disney World Resort Property Rules

Image

4. Will I encounter Star Wars characters during my adventures ?

Yes. During your Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser voyage, you’ll interact with them in ways you’ve only dreamed of. You might help hide a Wookiee stowaway, or you might feed intel to the First Order to gain their trust. The choice is yours, but keep in mind that your interactions—and their perceptions—will affect how your adventure unfolds. You’ll also meet new characters about the Halcyon Starcruiser, including crew members Captain Riyola Keevan, Cruise Director Lenka Mok, and Sammie the mechanic; droids SK-62O and D3-O9; and musicians Gaya, Ouannii, and Sandro Alimander. Watch out for the First Order Stormtroopers, who are under the command of Lt. Croy. During your voyage, you might even see some familiar faces from the Star Wars films, such as Rey and Kylo Ren.

“We brought in some industry experts in immersive theater to help us understand that craft and really make it a comfortable environment for everyone,” Marc Rothschild, Producer, Disney Live Entertainment, says. “Our actors are trained to guide the way and to help guide the story. It’s nice, because it’s a really intimate environment, so we are creating these really intimate conversations. I would say seek those out. If you’re not comfortable in the big stories and becoming part of it, then possibly just try an element in a smaller environment, maybe in your lightsaber training. It’s a good opportunity to see if you could be a different character and bring some story to that.”

5. How do I use the Star Wars: Datapad ?

Star Wars: Datapad is one of the many fun, interactive experiences offered within the Play Disney Parks app*. It enhances your adventure when you visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, but more than that, it is an essential tool while aboard the Halcyon starcruiser. The Star Wars: Datapad offers a personalized itinerary of activities and events, and it presents communications from the crew and others you may encounter along the way.

For those who are less experienced role-players, the Star Wars: Datapad is a great way to begin interacting with characters. “I’m an introvert, so going up and talking to a person I’ve never met before is a little intimidating,” Anisha Deshmane, Creative Producer, Walt Disney Imagineering, says. “But having a person reach out to me and say, ‘We haven’t met yet, but I have this information I need to tell somebody about,’ gives me an invitation to play in a way I might not have accepted in-person. We’ve layered all of these different invitations for guests. Some people are going to have a great time hanging out in the Sublight Lounge, and a character is going to wander in and strike up a conversation with them. That’s an invitation to get involved in the story. Some of our some of our passengers are going to sit back and take a look at their Datapad and wait for messages to arrive. It’s another way to get invited into the story.”

If you are planning a Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser voyage, please download or update the Play Disney Parks App on your mobile device prior to your departure date.

A Guide to the Locations Onboard the Halcyon Starcruiser

Oh, the places you’ll go...

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, an immersive-theater experience playing out over two nights, will open March 1, 2022, at Walt Disney World Resort—and although we just returned to Earth after embarking on an early voyage, we’re still seeing stars even now! The Halcyon starcruiser has a rich history in the Star Wars universe, but in case you’re unfamiliar with the glorious vessel, some experts are here to get you better acquainted.

Doug Chiang, Vice President and Executive Creative Director, Lucasfilm, says they approached the ship‘s design the same way they approached it for the Star Wars films. “There's a logic to it in terms of the form language, and why the spaces are there,” he tells D23. “When you do that homework, that automatically grounds it in something very familiar, and then we layer in the Star Wars aesthetic. The whole layout is very purposeful in terms of where the bridge is, where the restaurants are, how the hallways connect to the spaces, because that all ties into the exterior ship design. It makes everything onboard the Halcyon starcruiser feel very real—because it is, in some ways, very real.”

Imageµ

WE’VE GOT A GOOD FEELING ABOUT THIS

Your experience begins when you arrive at a terminal just outside of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It looks like a non-descript bunker—but the minute you set foot inside the Launch Pod, you’ll see yourself hurtling toward the sky through a viewport on the ceiling! After the doors open, crew members will greet you in the Halcyon starcruiser’s Atrium, the ship’s central gathering space. Once everyone is onboard, Captain Riyola Keevan will welcome all to the ship from the muster. The Atrium is a good place to meet friends both old and new, and to participate in events and games.

“We designed a ship that needs to feel authentic and part of the Star Wars universe in the same way that the Millennium Falcon or the Tantive IV do,” Greg Ashton, Executive Architect, Walt Disney Imagineering, explains. “But it has to function. Guests have to be able to live in it and touch in it for two nights. We had to get all of the spaces to functionally lay out and integrate, but also have their own character. Some are moody, some are intimate. It was a great challenge for us to be creative but also pragmatic.”

As the story unfolds, passengers may find themselves embarking on missions in areas of the ship that would typically be forbidden. “With people spending so much time on the ship, we wanted it to be comfortable and sophisticated,” Ashton says. “Most of the ship is quite refined and well-appointed. But as you explore the Engineering Room, for example, there is a little bit of that Star Wars grit. Obviously, you see a lot of that when you go to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and explore Black Spire Outpost, but it was fun to sneak that in here. We don’t show a lot of the behind the scenes, so to do it in-story adds to the overall experience: ‘We’re not supposed to be here, but let’s sneak away.’”

Image

Matt Martin, Senior Creative Executive, Lucasfilm Ltd., adds, “That goes a long way with guests—that feeling of ‘I’m not supposed to be here, but I’m here, and look at all of this cool stuff!’ You hear people talk about it around the ship. A guest will say, ‘I was just in the Engineering Room,’ or, ‘I just in the Cargo Hold,’ so another guest will ask, ‘How did you get in there?’ It leads to some great story moments between the guests.”

If you prefer to take on a more passive role, there are plenty of things to appreciate onboard the Halcyon starcruiser. For example, the artwork hanging on the Mezzanine level in the Atrium is named “The Unified Galaxy,” depicting the Core Worlds all the way out to the edges of Wild Space. The piece was commissioned by Leia Organa and presented as a gift to the Halcyon starcruiser crew when she and her husband, Han Solo, honeymooned onboard the vessel after the battle of Endor. (Read all about it in Beth Revis’s novel Star Wars: The Princess and the Scoundrel, publishing August 16, 2022.)

The Hyperspace Compass on display in the Atrium honors the legacy of its original owner, Chandrila Star Line founder Shug Drabor. Across the way, a display case at the entrance to the Sublight Lounge holds a bottle of Chandrilan champagne from the same vintage as the year of the ship’s maiden voyage 275 years ago. As the bottle did not shatter during the ship’s christening, it was preserved as a symbol of good fortune.

Image

A GALAXY OF ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

As we mentioned, passengers become part of the action as soon as they board the ship—meaning there are many interactive elements sprinkled throughout the Halcyon starcruiser. As such, the tactile design elements were just as important as the dazzling décor. “It was very important to us, in a lot of our interactive spaces, to make it feel like it was actually part of the ship—that when you push a button, you see something happen because of it,” Dan Brookwell, Production Designer, Walt Disney Imagineering, says. “For example, our Bridge is made up of a bunch of different stations where each person has a different responsibility to do something that will impact the ship. We actually had a large exploratory session to ask: What does each button feel like when you push it? Should it be like satisfyingly clicky... or very soft? It all goes back to story.”

Bryce Schulte, Interior Designer, Walt Disney Imagineering, adds, “What’s really interesting about the Bridge—and a lot of components onboard—is that we didn’t want to lose that graphic, analog nature that Star Wars is known for. Dan and his team have done a great job of incorporating and melding those button placements to the graphic line work to make it all cohesive.”

Image

One of our favorite experiences took place in the Lightsaber Training Pod, a specially equipped room dedicated to training passengers in the ancient art of wielding a lightsaber. “We worked with the experience team to come up with how they train people to determine what the space would require,” Chiang says. “The Imagineering team was spectacular in terms of coming up with the gameplay. It’s a deep experience—so it has to be very fulfilling, but simple enough so kids and adults can all learn how to wield a lightsaber.”

5 Ways to Fully Immerse Yourself in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

Are you ready to become the hero of your own Star Wars story?

Earlier this week, we embarked on a two-night adventure onboard the Halcyon Starcruiser—a vessel known for its impeccable service and exotic destinations—to gather intel on Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, opening March 1, 2022, at Walt Disney World Resort. This first-of-its-kind immersive adventure is a vacation experience that goes beyond anything Disney has ever done. What’s it like to travel to a galaxy far, far away—to really like to see, feel, and live a Star Wars story? You’re about to find out...

Every experience onboard the Halcyon starcruiser is carefully crafted to create a compelling narrative; think of it as choose-your-own-adventure role playing. During your voyage, choices you make while interacting with characters, crew, and other passengers affect your personal story. For example, you may be asked to deliver a secret message, take part in a high-stakes heist, or hide an ally (like we did for our friend Chewbacca). Not only do such decisions impact how the story will unfold for you, but they also intertwine with those of other passengers and well-known characters.

Image

“We know that our guests are very diverse, so we wanted to create storylines that would appeal to different people,” Marc Rothschild, Producer, Disney Live Entertainment, says. “We have traditional Star Wars storylines with the Resistance and the First Order, but then we’ve also introduced some other storylines, like a romance storyline that everyone can interact with, that was crafted for them and their interests.”

Alex Lee, Production Manager, Disney Live Entertainment, adds, “It all depends on how you want to engage. We knew some guests would play lightly and take a more casual approach. We knew other guests would want to go heavy, LARP [Live Action Role-Playing]-style. We built the storyline so that you could take in all points of view, depending on how you play, and we could provide all those touchpoints for guests.”

The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser narrative takes place between the films Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Now you’ll see what happens to Rey and Kylo Ren following the battle of Crait in a gripping storyline that connects to and complements Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

What else do you need to know before you go? Read on...

1. EXPLORE INTERACTIVE, INTEGRATED DESIGN DETAILS ONBOARD THE HALCYON STARCRUISER.

The Halcyon starcruiser is celebrating its 275th anniversary—and fans may already know it has lengthy history in the Star Wars universe. Built on Corellia in the same shipyards that produced the iconic Millennium Falcon, the Halcyon starcruiser is beautifully and elegantly designed; its clean, elegant lines are reminiscent of Leia Organa’s personal ship, the Tantive IV, while evoking the glitz of high galactic society.

According to Bryce Schulte, Interior Designer, Walt Disney Imagineering, “A lot of thought went into: What does a well-appointed starcruiser feels like in the context of Star Wars? And how do we make that feel authentic to guests who maybe have only seen one aspect of Star Wars, which might be more of a wild, wild west style? There are a lot of references. If you look at Dryden Vos’ First Light yacht, or the casinos in Canto Bight, they’re clean, beautiful, luxurious. We took references from those, and then, of course, gave the Halcyon starcruiser its own personality. You’ll see it reflected in the colors, the textures, and the furnishings.”

Over its lifetime, the Halcyon starcruiser changed hands many times and was used for various purposes, from covert diplomatic missions to Imperial engagements to Hutt-sponsored casino cruises and more. You become part of the action the moment you board the ship, which Chandrila Star Line has restored to its original glory to recreate its maiden voyage from the Core World of Chandrila to the far-flung Outer Rim destination of Batuu. The starcruiser is once again a gleaming example of the finest craftsmanship in the galaxy—a place to explore, to relax, and to go on an adventure.

Image

To make sure everything onboard feels “authentically Star Wars,” Disney Imagineers “basically created a design language,” Dan Brookwell, Production Designer, Walt Disney Imagineering, tells D23. “We did the same thing when we designed Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, where we created a new place guests hadn’t seen before. But in order to do that properly, we had to figure out: What is the Star Wars essence? What is the DNA of that aesthetic?” The Imagineers worked closely with Lucasfilm Ltd. to answer those questions. “Using them as sort of a north star was especially helpful in beginning stages,” he says. “The great thing about the Halcyon starcruiser is that after a while the cadence takes on its own life, and then you start to see that design language flourish.”

As you might expect, the accommodations onboard the Halcyon starcruiser are unlike anything you’ll find on Earth. Passenger cabins feature a viewport into space that continuously changes during your journey. You’ll see planets, ships, stars, and other breathtaking galactic sights float by on the majestic canvas of the cosmos. The starcruiser features 100 cabins and suites, which create an atmosphere of comfort, exclusivity, and style.

Image

Each Standard Cabin is fitted with furnishings and fixtures designed to ensure comfort while traversing the galaxy, including a pullout table and a TV with entertainment from your home planet. One-bedroom Galaxy Class Suites include a living space with an integrated seating area and all the comforts of Standard Cabins, plus a double-vanity bathroom, bar area, and two windows with views into space. Two-bedroom Grand Captain’s Suites come with all the comforts of Standard Cabins, plus an integrated seating area, a main suite with a double-vanity bathroom, a second bathroom with a single vanity, a bar area, three windows with views into space... and some fun surprises!

In your cabin or suite, you can choose to interact with D3-O9, the ship’s Logistics Droid, via vidscreen and have real-time conversations about your adventures. She knows everyone and everything happening onboard during a voyage. Commissioned centuries ago by Chandrila Star Line’s founder, D3-O9 has seen the Halcyon (and the entire galaxy) evolve, so she isn’t exactly shy about sharing their history or her opinions.

(When D3-O9 is activated by pressing the Droid Link button, recordings of sounds detected within the cabin, including voices, will be created to improve personalized interactions. At this time, D3-O9 will be only available for a limited test period.**)

Image

Don’t be afraid to explore the Halcyon starcruiser, as you will perhaps find hidden spaces that are perfect for uncovering secrets or holding clandestine meetings. From the Lightsaber Training Pod, a specially equipped room for training passengers in the ancient art of wielding a lightsaber, to the Engineering Room, which serves as the ship’s control center (and is normally off-limits to passengers), there’s much to discover.

“We’ve created a space that is almost a palette for characters and guests to come in and recreate, based on how the story is unfolding,” Brookwell says. “The spaces can feel drastically different one night versus the next, because everybody makes it their own.”

Image

2. JOIN THE RESISTANCE, THE FIRST ORDER... OR CHOOSE YOUR ALLEGIANCE FOR THE RIGHT PRICE.

You’ll encounter a wide array of characters during your two-night journey. They may be heroes of the Resistance, emissaries of the First Order, members of the ship’s crew, or others simply trying to make their own way in a galaxy far, far away. By interacting with these characters, you’ll make new friends, learn useful information, discover secret parts of the ship, go on special missions, and more. These moments build upon one another during your voyage, unlocking real-time, dynamic storytelling in ways Disney has never done before—driven by an eclectic cast of characters both familiar and new.

“It’s important that when passengers come onboard the starcruiser, they really understand that they are stepping into a Star Wars story,” Travis Finstein, Assistant Producer, Walt Disney Imagineering, tells D23. “Everything supports that, including the characters they encounter. We have an incredible cast bringing this experience to life and bringing a lot of character development to their performances. There are things fans have come to expect from Star Wars, so they draw from that; these characters are molded with that in mind. I think that’s why they are creating such strong impressions.”

Image

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more dedicated or loyal crew than the one aboard the Halcyon starcruiser. Charismatic, respected, and trustworthy, the Pantoran Captain Keevan remains cool under pressure as she leads each voyage. Her right-hand, Cruise Director Lenka Mok, is in charge of onboard entertainment; it’s her job to make sure each voyage is memorable. SK-62O, an astromech droid, is Mok’s assistant cruise director, ensuring things run smoothly and on time. The mechanic Sammie is eager to prove himself on the famous ship, and his tasks always seem to get done... somehow.

If you’re in the mood for stargazing, look no further than the Twi’lek singer Gaya, an all-around galactic superstar known for her distinctive music. On the first night, she treats passengers to an exclusive performance in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room—arranged by her smooth-talking manager, Raithe Kole. It’s his job to ensure Gaya gets everything she wants, no matter what. Ouannii provides accompaniment for Gaya’s performances. While she speaks Huttese (the same language of infamous gangster Jabba the Hutt), Ouannii has a charming personality that helps her make instant connections with guests—and with Sandro Alimander, an aspiring musician who’s a big fan of Gaya.

Image

If you sensed the Force awakening in you... well, you’ve come to the right place! In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), the Empire destroyed the Jedi temple on Jedha, which was under the protection of the Guardians of the Whills. Though their survivors were scattered throughout the galaxy, the Guardians remained dedicated to preserving knowledge of the Force. Descendants of this group, known as the Saja, have found safe haven onboard the Halcyon starcruiser and use one of its training pods to teach the ancient art of the lightsaber. Though not Jedi themselves, they can sense the Force in others and teach them how to find their connection to this mystical power.

You’ll also encounter characters from other Star Wars films, such as Resistance heroes Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, and Rey, and the First Order’s Kylo Ren. As for new characters, the ambitious and intimidating First Order Lt. Harman Croy takes a special interest in the starcruiser after noticing that Resistance activity springs up at each of the ship’s ports of call. Like Lt. Croy, First Order Col. Grav Talis takes his duty and the mission of the First Order very seriously. He answers directly to General Hux and is intent on ridding the galaxy of Resistance fighters—and anyone who supports them. Under Lt. Croy’s command, First Order stormtroopers search the starcruiser to investigate rumors of Resistance fighters embedded among the crew and passengers.

Crew members come with their own unique back stories that span the entire galaxy. “We were really thrilled to empower cast members to find their place within the larger Star Wars galaxy,” Lee says. “We started to explore a little bit of that with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with how cast members were able to live their Star Wars story and bring that to guests to make it feel alive. Cory Rouse, one of our directors on the ship, has been really pivotal in integrating traditional entertainment with how it gets played. Each crew member is able to impact the guest experience based off their knowledge.”

Image

3. EXCHANGE SECRET COMMUNICATIONS.

Deepen your engagement with characters and storylines via the Play Disney Parks mobile app on your smart device.* Through the Star Wars: Datapad, found inside the app, you can access a plethora of functions that will help guide your experience.

“The Star Wars: Datapad has existed in Play Disney Parks since the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge as a way to deepen that experience,” Anisha Deshmane, Creative Producer, Walt Disney Imagineering, says. “We’ve expanded it for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, creating custom tools to help our passengers better navigate their journey. It gives passengers private moments of choice and is seamlessly integrated into all of the other activations that make the starcruiser a fully immersive, 48-hour experience.”

The Events function updates your itinerary continuously throughout your two-night stay, evolving with new invitations and secret meetings as you interact with different characters and complete various missions. Need to change a scheduled activity? Ask a crew member for assistance. You wouldn’t want to miss lightsaber training, would you? From bridge training to sabacc lessons, you’ll find new adventures ’round every corner!

Image
The Star Wars: Datapad’s Comms function, meanwhile, receives and sends information that relates to missions and adventures, which can impact how stories unfold during your voyage. It was a real badge of pride when Cruise Director Lenka Mok sent us a message and entrusted us to help her complete a covert assignment... and on the flip side, it was a real nail-biter when Lt. Croy questioned our allegiance to the First Order!

Not sure where to complete a mission? The Star Wars: Datapad’s Map function provides the layout of both the starcruiser and Black Spire Outpost on Batuu. Passengers use these maps for navigation as they go on missions during their adventure. The Tools function activates whenever a new job calls for a specific skill set, especially while on a planet-side excursion in Black Spire Outpost. Finally, the Profile function shows your affiliation as you continue through the story.

“Our job was to ensure that the Datapad doesn’t feel like it’s an isolated thing on your device,” Deshmane says. “It is connected to the things you see physically in the environment around you, where you can see the change being enacted in real time.”

Image

On the second day of your voyage, the Star Wars: Datapad will again come in handy as you visit Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, unlocking new levels of engagement and interactivity across Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. There, adventures that began on the starcruiser the previous day continue to play out as part of the immersive storytelling.

Speaking of Batuu, your outing begins after transports take you directly to the planet’s surface, disembarking through an exclusive entrance at the outpost’s Docking Bay 3. Upon arrival, you may receive messages in the Star Wars: Datapad—sent by characters you met onboard the ship—asking you to engage in special and specific missions on Batuu. Pay close attention to the Star Wars: Datapad to help your new friends—or to betray and mislead them. As always, the choice is yours...

“The things you’re finding or revealing on your Datapad are playing into the overall story, but other people might not know about it,” Deshmane says. “You’re actually making an impact on other people’s stories as you’re going through your experience.”

As you accomplish various tasks—from “slicing” systems to translating messages written in Aurebesh—your reputation within the larger story builds and evolves, impacting how your adventures unfold when you return to the Halycon starcruiser later that day.

Image

“Because there’s so much story, these characters are able to continue to communicate with you and deliver multiple points of view—to provide motivations, to provide closure, to provide reasons for you to keep exploring the ship,” Lee says. “All of that is integral to the Datapad and how that information is curated for you, based off of how you interact with those characters. For instance, you could be playing First Order really hard, so you’ll get one type of message. But if Lt. Croy perceives you might be double-crossing him, you’ll get a different type of message. Both [connect] to the larger story, but the way it comes to you, depending on that character interaction and perception, is what makes the integration of technology and entertainment so unique.”

As part of this unified story, starcruiser guests are given one-time entry to the two signature attractions in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge—Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance—through the Lightning Lane entrance. You can discover new context to the stories told in these attractions, learning more about the characters involved and the ramifications of the missions they undertake. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser was developed at the same time as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and they were designed to integrate from the beginning.

Lunch at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo (or other select locations) is included for guests on a starcruiser voyage. You can also request reservations at Oga’s Cantina, Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers, and Droid Depot (but the cost of food, beverages and merchandise at those places isn’t included in your Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser vacation).

Image

4. EXPAND YOUR PALATE WITH EXCLUSIVE FOOD AND BEVERAGE OFFERINGS THAT ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD.

If the mere thought of dining at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo or sipping a unique cocktail at Oga’s Cantina made your stomach grumble, just wait until we tell you about all of the delicious food and beverage offerings available onboard the Halcyon starcruiser! The ship boasts a robust and imaginative dining program developed especially for this vacation experience. Enjoy menus full of familiar tastes but unexpected colors and textures, deepening the immersion in your galactic voyage.

When the sky is literally the limit, how did Brian Piasecki, Culinary Director, Concept Development, develop the menu? Like all things onboard the Halcyon starcruiser, he says, “It all starts with the story. We have great partners with Walt Disney Imagineering, and once we sat with them and really understood the concept of the ship and what the cruise would be, we took that as an incredible challenge. They helped by sending us a great deck: ‘These are all the planets that are going to be on the tour of the Halcyon.’ Then we started our research: ‘What animals live there? What plants live there? What do each planet’s inhabitants eat?’ From there, we themed all our food around that.”

“Lucasfilm definitely had a lot to add to the conversation,” Piasecki continues. “Once we had the foods we wanted identified, we then went back to Lucasfilm and asked, ‘Can you help us with some names? What would you guys suggest for ‘vegetables’? So, we call it flora. Things like red fruit—that’s a tomato. Long fruit—that’s a banana.”

Image

Each meal is served in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, located on Deck 4. This dynamic and welcoming supper club offers breakfast and lunch buffets during the day, then comes alive each night of the voyage with a lavish multi-course, table-service menu of both otherworldly and familiar origins. “We want it to be a wow,” Piasecki says, “so we don’t want our guests to know what they are getting into that first night.”

And who doesn’t love dinner and a show? The first night’s dinner features a live performance from Gaya, the Twi’lek musical superstar with a big personality and an even bigger voice. You’ll be captivated as she moves throughout the room singing her top songs. (We found ourselves humming her hits throughout the rest of our stay onboard the starcruiser.) The Crown of Corellia transforms with lighting and movement as Gaya is accompanied by Ouannii, the talented Rodian musician, in a show that inspires the entire room to get up and dance. Listen carefully during their set, as you may find that Gaya’s dinnertime performance sheds light onto more of the goings-on around the ship; Gaya may have another reason for being aboard the starcruiser...

Image

The second night offers the “Taste Around the Galaxy” dinner experience, with each course inspired by a different planet. “Walt Disney Imagineering had this great idea to take every course and design it around a planet, incorporating lighting and music, to really transport you to that planet,” Piasecki explains. “It was important to us and important for the story to serve each course family-style, because that allows us to serve everyone quickly so they get the same experience as they’re watching the show.”

Highlights from the “Taste Around the Galaxy” dinner experience include smoking cheeses and bread, reminiscent of the molten planet Mustafar; blue shrimp from the dense jungles of Felucia; and beef and seafood native to the Wookiee home world of Kashyyyk. “The blue shrimp I’m probably the most proud of, just because of the way it came out and the wow factor that it gives,” Piasecki tells D23. “It took us about six months to perfect. It wasn’t hard to find the blue color, but we had to find the right shade and the proper penetration of the blue into the meat of the shrimp. We had the vessels specially made—they’re individually handblown glass out of Spain—to give us the effect we’re looking for. Some of the dishes are very much over the edge and exotic, if you will, and some are a bit more familiar, because you need that balance.”

The Sublight Lounge, located just off the ship’s Atrium, offers a stylish locale for passengers to socialize and enjoy casual refreshments, including an assortment of ales, signature cocktails, and wines from across the galaxy, as well as complimentary snacks.

Image

The sophisticated lounge isn’t Mos Eisley or Oga’s Cantina—it caters to a more upstanding clientele, shall we say. “We decided, ‘Hey, let the Cantina be the Cantina,” Jenn Mariano, Concept and Development Project Manager, Beverage, says. “We’re going to bring an elevation and a different style to our beverages at Sublight Lounge.”

Two of our favorite beverages include the Hoth Icebreaker and the Mooja Twist—but we sampled nearly all of them and can confirm that each has a distinct flavor and personality. “Just like anything we do at The Walt Disney Company, we start with story,” Mariano says. “The beverage team researched the planets and their inhabitants, and that’s how we came up with the base for each drink. When you look at the Hoth Icebreaker, for example, it started off with us thinking, ‘The Hoth planet is desolate, and you can’t really live on it. How can we make something enticing?’ We honor the beauty of the water underneath icebergs and put it into the beverage liquid itself. And even though we’re creating an intergalactic beverage, we have to make it something guests will actually enjoy, so it’s reminiscent of a lemon drop. We top it with some lemon foam, and then we put a shard of ice on top that comes from the planet Hoth.”

You might see Gaya and other characters float in and out of Sublight Lounge. There’s also a working holotable for fans of sabacc, one of the galaxy’s oldest and most popular card games (although this one is a bit different). Just remember... no cheating!

5. DRESS FOR THE ROLE YOU WANT.

An extensive merchandise collection for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser enhances the role-play vacation experience, inviting you to further immerse yourself in a galaxy far, far away. The stunning Chandrila Collection boutique offers a wide assortment of apparel and accessories that guests can purchase and wear throughout their voyage.

“For Star Wars, shopping, retail, merchandise—that’s all part of the DNA of the franchise,” Brad Schoeneberg, VP of Brand Merchandising, says. “That goes back to 1977 and 1978 when Star Wars toys caused a worldwide frenzy. Since then, any time there’s a unique Star Wars experience, fans get very excited about the merchandise. For Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, it really came down to a few questions: If you’re going to have your own experience—if you’re going live your own story—what do you want to be? What character do you want to play? Where are you from? How do we enable that through our fashion? We focused heavily on our galactic fashion, thinking about every demo and every member of your family—what they want to be and what types of roles they want to play. We were inspired by all parts of the Star Wars galaxy.”

Image

Passengers can dress the part with robes, tunics, and other authentic fashion apparel evoking Star Wars characters such as Padme Amidala, Leia Organa, and Alderaanian officials, among others. (We felt like royalty wearing the Senator Bail Organa Security Aide Jacket and Tunic.) Headwear helps guests transform into an alien species, with Twi’lek “lekku” head tails or the striped, horned montrals of a Togruta. Premium garments and accessories featuring the ship’s logo are also available in the boutique.

“When you look at the costumes, the roleplay, you’ll see things that were inspired by the films, such as Padme Amidala’s cape or Leia Organa’s security aide costume,” Schoenberg says. “These are all things we took right offscreen.” To ensure their authenticity, he says, “We went to the Skywalker Ranch, took the originals out, and matched the shaping and sizing details to reproduce them for the first time for fans.”

If you want to style yourself like one of the new characters you’ll meet onboard the Halcyon starcruiser, you’re in luck. “We saw these costumes coming together and thought, ‘Kids are definitely going to roleplay as these new characters,’” Schoeneberg tells D23. “And then there were things we just created, simply because we thought you might need them for the experience. Our little black dress comes from an image we received from the set of Canto Bight, when everyone wore very fancy apparel in the casino. This feels like a different side of Star Wars that we don’t normally get to see.”

Image

Want to get outfitted before your voyage? Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser guests are eligible to purchase select merchandise on shopDisney.com up to 60 days prior to their reservation check-in date and up to 30 days after their check-out date. In order to purchase, the email address used to sign into shopDisney must also be linked to your Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser reservation. Based on current shipping times, it’s recommended that guests order at least two weeks prior to leaving for their vacation.

That’s not all! Merchandise offerings include a remote-control SK droid, a light-up model of the Halcyon starcruiser, and the Legacy Lightsaber Training Hilt and Legacy Reflective Shield, in addition to commemorative Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser items.

“If you visited the Sublight Lounge off the Atrium, some of the vessels used inspired some of our drinkware,” says Schoeneberg. “There’s a home goods collection that is inspired by some of the things you see as you’re going through the dining experience. We had a blast with the SK droid coming out as a strong character in the overall storyline, so we reproduced that in a Droid Depot scale, so it’s familiar to what we’ve done at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with the droid building. Not only do we have an SK droid in that scale, but we offer SK as a wind-up and a collectible action figure.”

When you embark on your stay onboard the Halcyon starcruiser, will you join the Resistance or will you pledge your allegiance to the First Order? The choice is yours.

Dining Is Fully Immersive in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

One of the most remarkable moments during a Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser voyage is the dining experience you have onboard. I’ve been thinking about what made this so memorable for me, because it was something more than the amazing food.

And then I realized … dining onboard the Halcyon starcruiser engages all five of your senses, not just your taste buds, fulfilling the promise of surrounding you in a truly immersive Star Wars experience. Let’s break it down!

Image

Taste

The chefs on the Halcyon starcuiser come from the far corners of the galaxy and bring their own special dishes to the fore. Whether it’s the Bantha Beef, Tip Yip Chicken, or the Seared Kashyyyk Whitefish from Chewbacca’s homeworld, this is an intergalactic tour de force of familiar tastes with new and unexpected textures.

Image

Sight

The Crown of Corellia Dining Room onboard the starcruiser is a feast for the eyes. Here you dine beneath three large circular, multi-layered chandeliers complemented by a dazzling lighting display throughout the supper club. The lights go full-on concert mode when Gaya, the galactic superstar from the planet Ryloth, performs her biggest hits during the first night’s dinner. Then the next night the lighting changes colors to evoke the aesthetics of each course during a “Taste Around the Galaxy.”

Image

Sound

Oh, did I mention Gaya? She is, in a word, stunning. The Twi’lek singer glides effortlessly past the tables as her powerful voice fills every nook and cranny of the room. If you listen closely, though, you may learn more about the galaxy – and why Gaya is on this ship to begin with.

Image

Smell

I don’t know if I had an expectation for what dining in a galaxy far, far away is supposed to smell like … but this is it. Every meal brings its own tantalizing aroma that will have your mouth watering before you take the first bite.

Image

Touch

The Sublight Lounge offers great nightcap options after a fantastic dinner, like the Hoth Ice Breaker pictured here. These drinks hit on multiple senses with exotic flavors and photo-worthy looks. But one thing that really sets them apart is the glassware, which just feels cool to hold. It’s a small detail, but so important when creating an immersive experience that makes you feel like you’ve traveled to another galaxy.

Sauce haricots verts !

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Officially Launches Today !

Today marks the official launch of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort, and to celebrate I thought we’d take a quick photo tour through the Halcyon starcruiser. Come along as we journey to a galaxy far, far away thanks to the amazing work of our Disney photographers.

Image

You arrive for this first-of-its-kind two-night experience at the Galactic Starcruiser Terminal, where your bags and your car are whisked away as you begin this adventure.

Image

After boarding a Launch Pod and blasting through hyperspace, you dock with the Halcyon starcruiser and step out into its main deck Atrium. Here you see some guests greeted by SK-62O, the ship’s resident astromech droid (he’s helpful in a pinch).

Image

Image

You’re then escorted to your cabin, which is fun to explore in its own right – especially those sleeping berths built into one of the walls and the viewport out to space.

Image

Once you’re settled in, it’s time to head back down to the Atrium for the ship’s muster, led by Captain Riyola Keevan (seen here on the right) and Cruise Director Lenka Mok.

Image

Following muster is a good time to do a bit more looking around – I recommend the Sublight Lounge for a nice drink or a hand of holo-sabacc, or maybe a stroll into The Chandrila Collection boutique to pick up some clothing and accessories for your voyage.

Image

By now you should be checking your Star Wars: Datapad through the Play Disney Parks app on your mobile device. Your itinerary updates constantly throughout your stay, so you’ll always know when it’s time for some special onboard activities like …

Image

… Bridge Training …

Image

… Lightsaber Training …

Image

Image

… or dinner in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, featuring a spectacular musical performance by galactic superstar Gaya on the first night.

Whew … there’s a lot to take in already, and you could potentially do all of that in just the first few hours of your two-night journey!

We’re thrilled for guests to make this adventure-filled voyage that goes beyond anything Disney has created before. So as they say on the starcruiser … good journey and ta’bu e tay! (Hint: That last one means, “Cherish the moment” … fitting, don’t you think?)

Cast, Kids, Families Agree: Halcyon Starcruiser is Unforgettable

Image

After more than 25 years as a Disney cast member, I’ve been lucky enough to be part of a dozen opening teams – from Disney’s Art of Animation Resort to the Disney Skyliner – and each one has been a memorable experience. More recently, I’ve been part of the team of cast members and Imagineers working toward the launch of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, a project that’s been a great mix of excitement, challenge, energy … and a bit of the unknown. See, this is something big. Something super innovative. Something that truly is the first of its kind. And any time you do something for the first time, it can be a little daunting.

I was optimistic – though a bit uncertain – when my family of three was invited to board the Halcyon starcruiser for a test voyage. But any doubts I had were quickly left in a galaxy far, far away. As casual Star Wars fans, we know just enough to be dangerous at the Sabacc table. But seeing 14-year-old Addison – who tends to prefer the dark side and the First Order – and 10-year-old Zoe – who lives and breathes the optimism and hope of the Resistance – step off the Launch Pod and into the ship’s Atrium beaming ear to ear was the perfect start to the memorable experience this parent was hoping for.

The excitement continued radiating off us as we were welcomed by friendly ship droid SK-62O and Cruise Director Lenka Mok. We quickly realized a ship like the Halcyon was the ride for us. After all, while it might be fun to race across the galaxy in the Millennium Falcon, when it comes to our own travels, we’re looking for something a little more … well, clean.

As soon as our custom itinerary loaded into our datapads, we realized just how much there was to do onboard. Even beyond the bridge and lightsaber training we’ve heard so much about, there was droid racing, a fashion show, ship tours and so much more. And we kept adding things to our itinerary – which we quickly realized was continually updating the more we explored and interacted with the crew. We spent a lot of time together, though there were some moments when Addison was unaccounted for (we suspect there were First Order tasks at play).

On day 2, the fun continued with our excursion on Batuu. We’ve been fortunate enough to visit before, but we’ve never experienced the planet and its Black Spire Outpost quite like this. The datapads guided our adventure and we had fun completing jobs, decoding messages and talking with the locals. We saw things on-planet we hadn’t paid much attention to before – remember when I said we were casual fans? – and between the secret missions, attractions and explorations, we definitely got our steps in that day. When we got back to the starcruiser, I needed a nap! But the kids kept going – playing Sabacc, enjoying the activities, savoring some galactic treats and learning about the Halcyon’s storied history.

Some of the best parts of our voyage were the smaller moments we shared with the characters and crew. Before we stepped onboard, I knew Zoe would be thrilled to see a certain Wookiee during our travels. But I wondered if we would connect with characters who are newer to us. I was pleasantly surprised! Throughout the trip, there were so many fun experiences that struck us – singing songs with Sandro, meditating with a Saja, visiting with Gaya and even teasing some stormtroopers along the way. Definitely highlights!

Then there’s the crew. I know firsthand how much the team trains to deliver on the Disney promise of legendary service. Based on our test voyage, the crew of the Chandrila Star Line are some of the best. We were consistently greeted by name, welcomed with smiles and cheered on through our journey. And while the hospitality they showed was truly out of this world, what struck me more is how special they made us feel.

Shout out to crew member Zoe, who made it a point to check in with our own Zoe after bonding over their shared name. Their tearful farewell at the end of our voyage made my heart happy. Thanks to Chase and Stephen from Passenger Services, who helped smooth some bumps in our path (it was a test, after all). To the stormtrooper who helped me win our family Sabacc tournament – I salute you! And Saja Atin’la, we may need more of your training before we’re able to use the Force, but your guidance and calm confidence made a huge impression. All of you helped me feel like the super mom I always aspire to be.

It’s been a little while since we disembarked from the Halcyon starcruiser and we’re still talking about it around the dinner table. The memories from our family adventure onboard will stick with us for lightyears to come. And I wasn’t the only cast member who got to share the fun. Check out some others who had the chance to become intergalactic heroes.

DISPATCHES FROM THE HALCYON: THE STORY OF STAR WARS: GALACTIC STARCRUISER

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT HOW THE IDEA FOR THE INNOVATIVE NEW IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE WAS BROUGHT TO LIFE IN OUR WORLD AND THE GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY.

The instant you step off the launchpod and into the grand Atrium of the Halcyon starcruiser, you know your reality has shifted. The grandeur of the space, an opulently appointed double-decker room with circular chandeliers and rounded red-velvet benches, hints at the in-world history of the ship. And while the room is central to the story that unfolds for passengers in the 45-hour immersive entertainment experience, the Atrium itself is but the conduit to all that awaits. Behind sliding doors and in the corners of winding hallways, passengers soon find themselves in the presence of familiar aliens, armored stormtroopers, and other key elements that make it clear that you’re no longer just watching Star Wars happen on screen — you’ve stepped inside the story.

Image

First conceived by Walt Disney Imagineering in our galaxy as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge was being created for Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser’s  innovative nature dates back about a decade to the seed of an idea that would merge elements of existing entertainment and recreational experiences into one all-new innovation. It’s a formula for creative storytelling as old as Star Wars itself. Just as George Lucas first remixed and reimagined his favorite elements from sci-fi serials and Hollywood westerns, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, now open at Walt Disney World Resort, borrows elements of live-action roleplaying games, live theater, and a real-life cruise to create something wholly unique and new.

Image

Walt Disney Imagineering executive producer and creative director Ann Morrow Johnson remembers the eureka moment when the idea first snapped into focus. Several Imagineers had been passionately brainstorming about a highly-immersive hotel experience with story elements playing out before patrons, when someone said, “Well, aren’t you really talking about a cruise-style model?” Johnson recalls. The construct allows passengers to board and disembark as a group, creating a community onboard during their two-night stay and controlling some of the chaos with clear starting and ending points. “This is not just a Star Wars story,” she adds. “It’s about the mode of operation facilitating the structure of a story that can play out in a way that passengers can really participate and understand. I know how to go on vacation on a cruise. I know what that model feels like. And to use that as the sort of structure to hang the rest of the pieces on was the moment where it felt like we could really put this together.”

Scott Trowbridge, portfolio creative executive from Walt Disney Imagineering, says his team had been considering something of this caliber since before Lucasfilm was acquired by The Walt Disney Company. “This is an idea that we started thinking about many, many, many years ago,” Trowbridge notes, tracing its roots back to a strategic think tank he was leading at the time. “We were thinking about new ways to do immersive experiences and pretty quickly we settled on this idea of ‘wouldn’t it be cool if we could create some kind of a long-duration Star Wars experience?’ When Lucasfilm joined the Disney company, it became ‘Oh, well, now we should kind of get serious about this and really think about how we could bring Star Wars to life in a deeper, more immersive way.”

Image

Playful storytelling

The playful nature of the experience comes alive through a multitude of interactive experiences. With guidance from the crew and a handy datapad, passengers meet Captain Riyola Keevan and her crew, purveyors of a humble Chandrilan vacation cruise ship. But before Keevan can close out her welcome message at muster, the First Order arrives. As it turns out, everywhere the Halcyon has docked, a pocket of Resistance has bloomed. Suddenly, passengers are thrust into the center of the action, an integral part of the story unfolding all around the storied vessel. “Choices matter,” Trowbridge notes. You alone must decide if you are loyal to the First Order, a kindred spirit of the Resistance operatives, or something in between — from a member of the underworld to the esteemed Force-wielding Jedi.

Image

“The biggest challenge of getting this experience from the very beginning to opening day is that there’s nothing really like it in the world,” says Johnson. “Everyone was coming from a different starting point of what they thought it was. It’s not really a cruise. It’s not really a hotel. It’s not really a theme park attraction. It’s not really a theme park. It’s not really a 45-hour piece of immersive theater. It’s not really a live-action role playing game. It’s not really a crazy app to play with. It is the intersection of all of those things.”

To bring it to life, Imagineers put together a crew including theme park veterans and world class chefs. “That was wildly challenging, but also incredibly exciting to see. It became so much more than what was originally intended,” Johnson notes. For instance, designers layered in texture and smell to tease all the senses with the out-of-this-world menu, including blue shrimp from Felucia and a gummy type of dipping sauce. “We have gone to texture as a way of owning the story and developing it,” Johnson says, a touchpoint also seen in décor and cabin furnishings.

“It really is a brand-new type of experience,” adds Walt Disney Imagineering creative producer Anisha Deshmane, who helped guide development of the datapad.

Image

History of the Halcyon

To further cement the story that unfurls — a moment in time taking place between the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — Star Wars storytellers have begun to integrate the Halcyon into the larger landscape of continuity with books and comics adding to the ship’s storied 275 year history.

In-galaxy, the starcruiser was built in the shipyards of Corellia by the Anzellan founder of Chandrila Star Line, Shug Drabor, who originally used the massive ship for chartered voyages. During the era of the High Republic, the Halcyon was called upon to move the Starlight Beacon before its destruction.

Image

Later, in the years leading up to the Clone Wars conflict, the cruiser was purchased by the Hutt clan and retrofitted to become a high-end casino in a bid to compete with other luxury recreational ships that were popular at the time. A holo-sabacc table still holds court in the Sublight Lounge, a nod to those bygone days of gaming and gambling.

But with the fall of the Republic, the Galactic Empire seized control of the ship to be used as an officer’s retreat. Although the regime stripped the interior of much of its opulence, it was restored to its original design in the age of the New Republic. And currently, those who book passage will enjoy an excursion to Batuu, the location of the starcruiser’s first exotic voyage many years ago, as part of an anniversary celebration that happens to bring you in contact with Black Spire Outpost.

Image

Through it all, it was important to the creative team to stay true to the mythology that has come before. “There is so much about Star Wars that feels distinct to Star Wars,” Johnson says. “Because Star Wars is all about these moments of epic action and adventure, but also these very quiet moments of true human interaction.” Good and evil clash in a grand finale that plays out pitting Rey against Kylo Ren, the final piece of the story that draws on the side quests and decisions made by all those onboard. In that way, no two voyages will ever be quite the same. But at the heart of the entire experience is the DNA of Star Wars mythology, including a loyal astromech droid and his closest friend trying to do what’s right, a Wookiee, and a new recruit to the Resistance cause. “There are those relationships that find both the humor and the joy, the pain and the adventure and all of it,” Johnson says. That goes for droid and Rodian, Twi’lek and Togruta as well. “It’s all of the beings [onboard] that make up a core Star Wars story.”

DISPATCHES FROM THE HALCYON: MEET THE CHARACTERS ABOARD STAR WARS: GALACTIC STARCRUISER

PASSENGERS ENGAGE WITH NEW CHARACTERS AND CROSS PATHS WITH FAMILIAR FACES IN THE INNOVATIVE NEW IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE BASED IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY.

It’s easy to see why Ouannii, the Rodian Lumosynth player performing live music aboard the Halcyon starcruiser, and star Twi’lek songstress Gaya have already generated a following. Although the experience just launched this month, voyagers have already been seen wearing Ouannii bounds — ensembles inspired by the color palette and style of the character. And on one test cruise, a passenger donned a Gaya T-shirt, complete with dates from a fictional planet-hopping tour, to show their love for the musician, says Wendy Anderson, executive creative director for Disney Live Entertainment.

The duo bring to mind elements that are quintessentially Star Wars, evoking a more polished and posh version of Mos Eisley’s cantina, teeming with galactic tunes and brimming with otherworldly aliens. And for the first time, they don’t just pass us by on a screen. On a recent voyage, I immediately rushed over to compliment Ouannii’s purple locks and killer style. But when she not only stopped, but responded in Huttese, her Rodian mouth enunciating the foreign words with gestures that seemed to say she also liked my galactic garb, I was floored. Other than the occasional passing growl from Chewbacca inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, it’s the closest you can come to becoming your own character in the Star Wars galaxy.

The creative minds behind Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, now open at Walt Disney World Resort, knew characters would play an essential role in the experience, inviting passengers to play a vital role in the story unfolding around them. New faces had to flawlessly fit alongside key legacy characters like Rey and Chewbacca. “We knew that while we were creating new characters for this experience that could really be engaging for guests, we also wanted to bring the Star Wars that people know and love to life,” says Anderson. “Those new characters had to be able to stand up to these iconic Star Wars characters that already exist. We wanted them to feel real.”

Image

Heroes and villains

At the outset of the two-night journey, passengers meet the core crew aboard the Halcyon as well as some less-than-welcome First Order guests who have elbowed their way onto the ship.

The starcruiser is led by Captain Riyola Keevan, a Pantoran with striking blue skin, kind eyes and an iron will. Having started out as a quartermaster on the ship she now commands, Keevan’s affinity for her vessel is reminiscent of Han Solo’s love for the Millennium Falcon and she has the moral compass of Leia Organa to boot. “[Keevan] really is one of those impeccable, trustworthy stalwart leaders,” Anderson says. “And she also has a deep, deep history with not just the Halcyon, but with Chandrila Star Lines and also with a certain General Organa.”

Image

Keevan’s affiliation with the Resistance is part of what has led the First Order’s Lt. Harman Croy to board. “Because this is a galactic starcruiser in the Star Wars galaxy, sometimes things just don’t go as planned. Everywhere the Halcyon has been, a little pocket of the Resistance has bloomed,” Anderson notes. “And Lt. Croy is the person who noticed. He’s basically an analyst. And now Chandrila Star Lines is under investigation, like everyone, because the First Order is trying to take over the galaxy. He’s been a lieutenant for a while, so he has ambitions beyond that for himself and he’s going to interrogate every droid, every passenger, every crew member on that ship until he gets to the bottom of what he believes is going on.”

Image

Luckily, Keevan isn’t alone in her fight for good. On paper, her right-hand Cruise Director Lenka Mok is in charge of onboard entertainment, ensuring each voyage is an adventure in fun. Their work partnership is fairly new, but was cemented during a pirate attack on Mok’s first cruise, which plays out in Marvel’s Halcyon Legacy comic run. “They haven’t been working together for very long, but Lenka and the captain are simpatico,” Anderson says. “They just have this really strong bond.” Lenka’s trusted counterpart, SK-62O, is the latest in a line of beloved astromech droids, keeping Mok on schedule and storing vital intel for the Resistance in his databanks.

But while the droid’s affiliation may put him at risk of getting a First Order-issue restraining bolt, he’s far from the only crew member with direct ties to the larger cause. Sammie may seem like a regular mechanic, but he’s really more of a stowaway. “Sammie is so much fun. One of the things he’s done to win over the crew is just that he’s this kind of earnest, youthful presence, but also he has aspirations to be a Resistance hero,” Anderson says. “He was a wrench turner on Corellia who saw which way the world was heading because the First Order started to take over the shipyards. He essentially escaped.” Thanks to some carefully revised ship’s records, Sammie gets cleared as a member of the crew when he’s really just hopping a ride to the next port of call: Batuu, so he can formally join the cause.

Passengers can call upon the ship’s logistical droid, D3-O9, from their in-cabin terminals for details on their itinerary, and much more. “As you talk to her throughout your voyage, she actually asks you more questions and maybe tells you a little bit more about what’s going on inside the ship,” Anderson says. “She knows everything, and she’s also really charming and really just wants the best for our passengers. She will even sing you a lullaby if you ask.”

Image

Scoundrels and singers

On the first night, passengers come to know Galactic Superstar Gaya, her bandmate Ouannii, and their manager Raithe Kole.

“If you don’t know [Gaya’s] name before the voyage, you’ll certainly know it after she performs for you at supper on night one. She is incredible,” Anderson says. As a key alien character brought into the immersive experience, Gaya’s backstory is steeped in galactic lore fans of Star Wars animation will quickly recognize. “She has given herself her own power. She has created her own name, and now she’s here to really make sure that everything that she stands for, all of the power that she can wield stands for something. And that something is the freedom of her home planet of Ryloth.”

Image

Not to be outshone, Ouannii goes on her own character journey during the trip, a voyage of self-discovery, “finding her own voice and her own sound,” and maybe — just maybe — love among the stars. And in addition to her language acumen and brilliance on the Lumosynth, she shows off her skill with a Paktosynth and a Ketasiik during the journey.

Meanwhile, Kole is likewise much more than he seems. “You might think of him as sort of a scoundrel. You might think of him as a really great guy. All I know is he’s always looking for friends and allies in new places, and he is really there to make sure that all of Gaya’s contract riders are adhered to,” Anderson says.

And the ship is also safe harbor for the Saja, a group of nomadic lightsaber trainers who are descendants from the believers of the Force on Jedha. “They have scattered around the galaxy, but they are very, very interested in finding new Jedi relics and keeping the teachings of the Force alive,” Anderson says, “sparking hope throughout the galaxy. They’re not necessarily Force sensitive themselves, but they can sense it in other people and they help to bring it out.”

Image

Behind the scenes

Alongside Rey, Kylo Ren, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Chewbacca, the ensemble of characters compliments every facet of Star Wars storytelling, helping to guide new passengers on their own path whether they are rogue rebel, First Order allegiant, or simply curious about the Force or the lucrative profession of smuggling.

Hitting on those themes and affiliations was necessary, but ensuring the experience had droids and aliens that guests could interact with was also key, Anderson says. “It felt so important for us to bring aliens and droids into this experience from the get go because if you walk through our Atrium and the first character you see is a Rodian, then the second character you see is a droid, you’re going to know exactly what galaxy you’re in,” she adds. “We also wanted the aliens to be iconic Star Wars aliens. What’s more iconic than a Twi’lek or a Rodian, right?”

Behind the scenes, Imagineers tackled the challenge of making Gaya and Ouannii, look and feel like real aliens, while ensuring the human performers who embody the roles were comfortable. “Developing [Gaya’s] lekku was quite a process so that the performers could feel that they could move and actually turn their heads and enjoy being in this getup. That took some time to dial in.” But Anderson and the rest of the creative team knew having aliens inhabiting the experience was essential. “I felt very passionately that we wanted to have characters that didn’t look human. They were humanoid, they still had the limbs that we have, but we didn’t have any aspect of a human face. We had a full transformation.”

Image

Now the first several hundred voyagers are meeting Ouannii, Gaya, and the rest of the fascinating and colorful characters aboard the Halcyon.

“I think one of the things that is so special and unique about this entire experience is how you get to engage with characters. Every character that comes on board that ship is an opportunity and an invitation for you to play and go deeper in your experience if you want to,” Anderson says. And while they shepherd key story points that shape the overall experience, leading up to the grand finale, there are also quieter moments where passengers can take in these new characters and sit down one-on-one. “I think so much of what makes this special is the subtle moments of these characters just living their lives alongside you. The captain might sit down with you at dinner. You might meet Raithe in the lounge and he’s just playing Sabacc like everybody else in there. That is where these relationships start to develop. And I’m already seeing our passengers developing real loyalties and affinities for those characters.

“Sammie the mechanic, he’s constantly surrounded by people because he always needs help,” Anderson adds. “A certain Wookiee comes on board and Sammie speaks a little Shyriiwook, so they wind up together. And it’s very hard to hide a seven-foot-four Wookiee aboard a well-appointed but small starcruiser. So, you know, [Sammie] needs a lot of help with that. And the passengers really get engaged in their different storylines and their different needs and wants and helping them get from where they started to the end. It becomes a really, really important journey [for] the passenger as well.”

Inside look at the new Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser 2-night voyage

Disney's latest vacation experience takes hospitality out of this world and to a galaxy far, far away for an immersive, first-of-its-kind voyage aboard the brand new Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

Guests become passengers and heroes in their own Star Wars story as they live out a tailor-made galactic adventure at their own pace aboard the Halcyon Starcruiser. The vessel is known for its impeccable service and exotic destinations, like the bustling Black Spire Outpost on Batuu. Plus, you can finally live out your childhood dreams and wield a lightsaber in a training pod and dine on delicacies like Felucian-inspired blue shrimp.

Before Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser debuts at Walt Disney World Resort on March 1, we got an inside look at the two-night voyage aboard the Chandrila Star Line and after an exhilarating 48 hours we brought the highlights, sights and sounds back to Earth.

Storyline and characters

Familiar faces like Chewbacca and new characters emerge throughout the journey as the storyline spins forward.

Captain Keevan is at the helm, encouraging exploration, as cruise director Lenka Mok notifies people they can try their hand at defending the ship with operations training on the bridge, and Sammie the mechanic makes a name for himself while working on more than just systems in the engineering room. Guests also get to enjoy the music stylings of intergalactic superstar Gaya and meet her charismatic manager, Raithe Cole, who has his eyes on more than the stage throughout the voyage.

Guests become characters and legacy cast members can become allies thanks to the creative development from Lucasfilm Vice President and Executive Creative Director Doug Chiang and Walt Disney Imagineering Producer Travis Finstein.

"We are seeing people play with our characters as if they are action figures in a big Star Wars play set. They get their own personal interaction with them for extended periods of time and run around the ship with these characters leading them on missions," Finstein told "GMA." "They participate in Star Wars in a scale that they have never had a chance to do before. If you're a Star Wars fan you are going to experience Star Wars in a new way and it's very exciting."

As the storyline unfolds, we meet Lieutenant Croy of the First Order and his stormtroopers when they board the ship to investigate suspicious Resistance activity.

Toward the climax of the final night, without giving away any spoilers, guests are stunned by an interaction with a handful of iconic characters as an intense battle unfolds.

"It's really a lot of fun," Chiang added, "anything Star Wars for me, but this level of immersion is unlike anything I've ever done."

Lightsaber training and more!

Lightsaber training was no doubt the most-buzzed-about activity and for good reason.

The Saja, who trains a group of about 15 passengers at a time, leads you in the pod and lines you up in rows before powering up the electric blue weapon.

Upon instruction, students square up and ground their ready stance holding the base of the lightsaber at their body's center, pushing the button to illuminate the shaft and following a guided laser that sends a low-frequency buzz through your grip as you connect the weapon to the force.

Excursion to Black Spire Outpost on Batuu at Galaxy's Edge

Early on the second day, passengers are invited onto luxurious private transport shuttles to de-board and explore the galaxy's Outer Rim. At this point in each passenger's journey, their interactions have led to curated communications on their datapad to attempt missions for the characters they are helping while exploring the outpost.

A private reservation can be set up for Halcyon guests at the infamous Oga's Cantina, where I made friends with a chemist in order to get some pertinent information back to the ship for my own storyline's mission. The brightly colored, foaming, fizzing and bubbling beverages are a welcome libation break at this point in the planetside adventure and the perfect fuel before enjoying activities like hacking droids and running covert ops for either the dark side or the Resistance.

Amenities

Guests enjoy a well-appointed pod complete with stunning viewports that overlook the galaxy. The room we stayed in, but really only relaxed in to shower and sleep, had the Earth's equivalent of a king-size bed and two bunk pods. The sleek design was complete with modern functionality like ports for datapad charging and even an in-room digital logistics droid who goes by D3-09 and acts as a catalyst for each individual's daily story to continue with helpful information. By the end, she also became a confidant and friend who I was sad to say goodbye to.

As for off-ship, the special transport shuttle is reminiscent of a luxury bus-like liner and takes less than a 10-minute blast to planet where you are greeted by a private concierge service with cold water, charging ports and offered a direct contact to drop off any goods secured along the excursion, so if you purchase a porg plushy toy or local garments, you can leave them safely with the crew who will free your hands and take it back to the ship. Before departing Batuu, where temperatures can run hot, the crew offers chilled, wet towels and more beverages while waiting for your pod departure.

Specialty Magic Band

The specialty Magic Band that is worn throughout the voyage, available exclusively to passengers of the Halcyon cruise, also gives you access to information pads on ship, unlocks rooms and helps save and scan pivotal information specific to your personal adventure that sends feedback to your profile.

Additionally, it is preloaded with lightning lane passes for the two highly popular rides on Galaxy's Edge -- Rise of the Resistance and Smuggler's Run.

Food and drinks

The imaginative dining program developed especially for this experience plates up dishes with familiar tastes but unexpected textures, colors and ingredient names to further deepen the immersion of your galactic voyage.

Similar to an Earth-bound cruise, all-you-can-eat breakfast and lunch buffets are available inside the sleek Crown of Corellia Dining Room during the day, but then each night of the voyage it transforms to serve diners a lavish multicourse, table-service menu of both otherworldly and familiar origins.

Night one boasts dinner and a show where I enjoyed a seat at the captain's table in the center of the sunken seating area with an interactive live performance from Gaya -- the Twi'lek musical superstar who moves throughout the room singing her greatest and new hits. The second night offers a Taste Around the Galaxy experience with each course that hails from a different planet, including the highly buzzed about blue crustacean, Felucian shrimp.

Guests looking for a late-night libation or a game of Sabaac can snag a seat in the Sublight Lounge for drinks like the Fiery Mustafarian complete with lava extract and smokey mezcal or a Hoth Icebreaker made with lemon foam inspired by the icy desolate planet.

Exclusive merchandise

A one-of-a-kind Chandrila Collection boutique on board offers an extensive selection of never-before-seen merchandise to enhance the role-play vacation experience. The shop has a sweeping assortment of apparel and accessories for purchase from Lekku head tails, trading pins with the ship's logo and authentic apparel to home goods, hats and backpacks.

DISPATCHES FROM THE HALCYON: DATAPAD AND ACTIVITIES ON STAR WARS: GALACTIC STARCRUISER

STORIES UNFOLD IN REAL LIFE, BEHIND SECRET DOORS, AND THROUGH AN INTERACTIVE APP IN THE INNOVATIVE NEW IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE BASED IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY.

Sara Thacher’s nephew was excited to help the First Order.

During a test voyage of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser earlier this year, the 11 year old Star Wars fan set out to side with the antagonists, due in part to their cool costume appeal. Then he met some of the heroes of the Resistance. “And [suddenly] he’s having a real moral conflict,” says Thacher, experience designer for Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development. The two sat in their well-appointed cabin aboard the Halcyon starcruiser to talk it out — a surprise for Thacher, to be sure, but a welcome one. “We had this wonderful moment of talking about morality and ‘how do you want to play?’” she says, a discovery that left Thacher in awe. Another colleague witnessed two young passengers so engaged in the story that they were truly worried for Sammie, a mechanic and secret Resistance spy onboard. These small moments of empathy surprised the creators behind the experience, and cemented the success of the immersive storytelling in creating an environment where travelers truly felt their choices made an impact — good or bad – for the characters around them.

Image

Passengers now voyaging with Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser live their own Star Wars story through the immersive, interactive experience, where activities and plot points diverge as the choices you make shape the journey ahead. Beyond core activities like bridge training, lightsaber education, and galaxy-hopping dinners, the experience allows fans to choose their own destiny — to play as a rebel and rogue, a Sabacc card shark, or even a First Order sympathizer. But interactions in person and on a special app strengthen those connections and propel the story along as the voyage progresses.

The datapad in the Play Disney Parks app, which first uncovered new ways to interact with the planet of Batuu inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, has expanded to encompass an itinerary for the two-night adventure and communications between key characters along the way. “You have this constantly updated list of events,” Thacher says. “They’re all invitations, not obligations, but hints that cool things might happen. Communications coming in from characters, [are] like your text messages.”

Those messages deepen the relationships between passengers and the new characters aboard the ship. “The app enables you to continue to communicate with those characters even when they’re not right in front of you,” says Thacher. “So that that feeling of connection [with] the character continues and your relationship with them continues to grow.”

Image

“Maybe you helped bring Chewbacca on board as part of your bridge training, but then you get a message from Lieutenant Croy asking about reports of a Wookiee on board,” adds Anisha Deshmane, creative producer for Walk Disney Imagineering. “You have to make that moral decision of ‘Am I going to sell out Chewbacca? Or am I going to help keep him a secret?’ And those choices that you make along the way are really what shape your version of this story. The datapad is both utilitarian and also a way for you to become a part of the story, become a part of the goings on around the ship and the outcomes that happen.”

Image

Adventures on Batuu

During a recent voyage, my own excursion to Batuu turned into an errand for Raithe Kole, the songstress Gaya’s manager and a scoundrel in his own right. Upon returning to the ship and stopping by the Sublight Lounge, I encountered other passengers who had been sent on a special mission to recover a holocron for one of the Force-friendly Sajas aboard. In a room with just about 15 people gathered to watch, the holocron was opened to reveal a surprise message from one of my favorite Star Wars characters. “Some of the storylines onboard the ship have some of these very secret moments that get revealed over time,” says Deshmane. “And they’re really based on you establishing a relationship with a character and sort of getting deeper with that particular person over the course of the two days.”

Image

During a visit with friends, Deshmane says her party abandoned her to align with the First Order while she walked the path of the Resistance. “We’re all taking different paths through this voyage together, and we’re seeing different perspectives on things, which is true to real life, too. No one person has the exact same experience as anyone else.” Those differing points of view enrich the experience as passengers swap stories. “One of my favorite parts of my personal experience was meeting back up in the Sublight Lounge and we all sort of got little glimpses of what was going on and could share,” Deshmane says. “It really is a wonderful thing to be able to have multiple paths through this story, being able to see different parts of it evolve and then also come back together and share what you’ve seen.”

Boarding the ship also changes the way you may see Batuu, with the datapad connecting the new characters you meet to crates and corners around Black Spire Outpost. “The datapad was originally developed for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge as a way to explore this new outpost. With Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, we just took it a lot further,” says Deshmane. “We’ve heard a lot of guests saying, ‘I’ve been to Galaxy’s Edge before, I thought it would just be like a normal day in the park, but it turned into a whole different experience.’ Because you’re there for a reason. You’re there helping Sammie. You’re there investigating the Resistance for Lt. Croy. And then when you come back to the ship, it really is this interwoven, connected thing.”

Image

Maps and more

The datapad also includes maps to navigate the physical ship, leading you to real hidden rooms and secret data to glean more intel. For example, getting in with the Resistance might give you access to the Brig to free an operative or require you to slice into a communications hub off the Atrium in search of intel. If you gain access to the Cargo Hold, you’ll be able to explore some artifacts that have been left behind by previous passengers, including the lost ID of one Baron Papanoida, played by George Lucas himself on film.

It’s a piece of the experience that borrows from classic gameplay rules to help guide passengers along the journey. “This is an experience that is way more than the sum of its parts,” Thacher says. “And so making sure that all of those pieces coordinate together, makes sense together, and give our guests all of these multiple levels of ways to play. All of those things have to work together to make this experience happen.”

Image

Initially closed off to guests, the Engineering Room can also be open for players who make friends with crew members in need of extra hands to stave off, or perhaps support, a First Order take-over. The room also happens to be Thacher’s favorite place on the ship because the look and feel of it melds with the classic Star Wars aesthetic while so much of the rest of the ship is clean, brightly lit, and glamorous. “This is outside of all of the clean, kind of gleaming parts of the rest of the ship,” Thacher says. “And it’s a place where Chewbacca can yell at you in Shyriiwook to grab the hydro spanner. It’s just really delightful.” To perfect the idea, Imagineers built the first prototype out of cardboard to begin figuring out how to incorporate a series of puzzles, levers, lights, and buttons in the space. “Just a box fort,” Thacher says with a laugh.

Image

From fort to fabulous

In the months and years of collaboration and fabrication since, Imagineers created a space that looks and feels like a real Star Wars ship in its prime, allowing those who venture to live out their long-held fantasies from wielding a lightsaber to leaping into the fray of a dire space battle. The final experience is a true innovation.

“This experience is vastly different from anything else that we’ve done,” says Lucasfilm Story Group executive Matt Martin. “Mostly because of the length [of the play.] We’ve never had something where people stay overnight and stay within the same story for two days, two nights. How do you make a big overarching story that’s clear to everyone while also having so many individual paths that the passengers can take? And stories that the passengers themselves influence? It was such a fun challenge to deal with that.”

Image

The initial idea for the experience was actually deceptively simple, adds Cory Rouse, creative director for story development with Walt Disney Imagineering. “It began from a very simple place, which is how do we bring people into a world that is fully believable and authentic?” Rouse says. “From that point, we began to add all of our Disney technology, all of our Disney knowhow as far as bringing worlds to life, and we’ve really created a one-of-a-kind, two-night immersive adventure. But the crazy thing about this — what I love so much — is that it actually helps to reveal your Star Wars story. If you think about it, a movie asks you to kind of sit and ingest; this is asking you to invest. And the more that you invest, the more that you reveal yourself, the more it changes the personal lens for you. And from that standpoint, we’re going to go to places that have never been seen before.”

The construct leaves room for players to align with the heroes of the Resistance, the staunch First Order, or another group on the periphery of the central conflict, experiencing high-end glamour and the gritty, used-future allure of the films, with story elements interweaving and driving toward a clash between good and evil. “You get to experience both sides of Star Wars,” says Martin. “You have the glitzy, glamorous side on the Halcyon [starcruiser] itself. But then you also get to take your shore excursion down to the more gritty world of Batuu. Maybe you’re down there to join the Resistance. Or maybe you help Hondo bring in some coaxium and that plays an important role on your story [on the ship].”

Image

In many ways, the interactive elements of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser fulfill a promise for fans who have been creating their own Star Wars stories through play for over 40 years. “When Star Wars: A New Hope came out in 1977, George Lucas unleashed planets we had never seen, characters we could only imagine,” says Rouse. “The next step was to go buy the action figure or to play with that stick that became a lightsaber. [As kids,] we were able to create things that were not on the screen — our own version of Star Wars.” Now Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser invites you take that playfulness to the next level. “We are not asking you to just sit back and watch. We’re asking you to reveal yourself, to bring that love of Star Wars onboard our ship. And from that, you have the agency, you have the freedom to reveal yourself, find others like you. Maybe find a new way to see Star Wars. And from that agency, every single experience will be completely unique and it’ll be completely yours.”

New Legacy Lightsaber Hilt Inspired by Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Arrives at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Bright suns ! The wait is finally over for all my fellow Batuuans. In 2020 we asked you to vote for which legacy lightsaber hilt you hoped to see offered at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. You answered the call and the legacy lightsaber hilt you all voted for was the Cal Kestis legacy lightsaber hilt from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order!

Image

Image

Cameron Monaghan, the actor who plays Cal Kestis in the critically acclaimed Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order video game, recently journeyed to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Resort and got the full Star Wars experience while checking out the Cal Kestis legacy lightsaber hilt. You can add this legacy lightsaber hilt to your personal collection when it arrives at Dok-Ondar’s on March 25, 2022, only at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort!

Image

Those familiar with Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order will recognize the broken end design since Cal Kestis acquires the lightsaber after the weapon is damaged and is only capable of emitting a single blade. When you purchase this distinct lightsaber hilt, it comes with a dual lightsaber adapter, so you can recreate the original double-bladed design reminiscent of when the lightsaber was owned by Cal’s Master, Jaro Tapal, when you purchase a second hilt.

Image

While exploring Batuu, Monaghan traveled to Black Spire Outpost and met with the Gatherers at Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers to construct his very own lightsaber. Guests can make reservations to assemble their very own lightsabers

Enfin! On l'attendait celui-là, c'était le gagnant du vote il y a plus d'un an! Et le fait qu'il puisse être doublé est vraiment sympa et inattendu!

DISPATCHES FROM THE HALCYON: FOOD AND MERCHANDISE AT STAR WARS: GALACTIC STARCRUISER

EXPLORE DRINKS, APPAREL, AND OTHER CUSTOM ELEMENTS OF THE INNOVATIVE NEW IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE SET IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY.

In the halls of the Halcyon starcruiser, Padmé Amidala’s travel cloak is a popular fashion statement, swishing along as passengers enjoy the amenities of a Toniray, the teal-colored libation that hails from Leia Organa’s home planet of Alderaan, on their way to the Crown of Corellia dining room where a Taste Around the Galaxy multi-course meal awaits.

For the creative minds behind Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, the new two-night immersive experience now open at Walt Disney World Resort, no detail was too small in the planning stages for an innovative new way to step inside the Star Wars galaxy in every sense — and with all your senses engaged.

“We really started this whole project with a clean slate,” says Brian Piasecki, the culinary director in concept development for the experience. World-class chefs conceived fresh recipes and reimagined recognizable ingredients and menu staples. But first, Piasecki and his team set down some rules and guidelines to help craft the menu.

Image

For starters, any sandwich you could eat on the ship had to look “uniquely Star Wars,” he says. “We’re not going to do any sandwich that looks the way a normal sandwich looks. So when you see something like the grilled cheese bubble waffle with the red dipper, in its essence, it is a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. But when the creative juices start flowing, that’s what came up.” In the first month of voyages, the dish has already become a fan-favorite. Another childhood staple, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, is available at the lunch buffet but takes the form of a cream puff shell filled with sunflower butter and jelly from a piping bag

For the fancier sit-down dinner on the second night of the voyage, chefs created a Taste Around the Galaxy, a multi-course meal that pairs innovative culinary creations with the worlds of Star Wars, like blue shrimp from Felucia and a Mustafarian bread service. “Food is an important part of a cruise experience,” Piasecki says. “And with this being an upscale cruise line, we wanted that food to also be at that elevated level playing within the Star Wars story. We were able to continue to be creative, tie into those planets, and really help tell the story with the food.” That also extends to the first night’s dinner, with a trio of colorful spiral dumplings served during the Gaya concert. “They match Gaya and her outfit,” Piasecki says. “We hope the guests pick up on those little things.” For the final dinner, the dessert course even includes a scent experience. “It’s very, very immersive and it hits all of the senses.”

A toast with Toniray

The exploration of the galaxy extends to the drink menu in the Sublight Lounge, where several beverages are either named for worlds we’ve only visited on film or nods to creations from books and comics.

“The beverages really give you that sense of place,” says Evan Rosenthal, the beverage manager for concept development. “For example, when you think of Hoth, it’s very icy and cold. How do you represent that in a drink?” The answer: the Hoth Icebreaker. “You get these notes of lemon and there’s some vanilla and sweet foam with an ice shard. And it really takes you to what Hoth should feel and should taste like.”

The blue Toniray Chardonnay was first conceived for books exploring Leia’s homeworld of Alderaan, with a classic flavor that has a completely new look to it. And the Fiery Mustafarian, which comes in a special souvenir glass, gives you the chance to control the flavoring. “You get this smoky drink reminiscent of Mustafar and you can pour in the lava extract really choose your own heat adventure.”

Blue and green milk are on tap in the dining room, but the Sublight Lounge also includes some nonalcoholic specials like the Blue Milk Citrus Fizz. “We take blue milk and then you mix with flavors of lychee and the ever so popular blue milk sorbet,” says Rosenthal. “You’re able to experience different tastes all throughout your journey.”

Dressing the galaxy

Of course, for many passengers stepping into the Star Wars galaxy also calls for a costume change from their everyday attire. Fans are welcome to create their own Star Wars-inspired bound, a more subtle nod to characters and themes from the saga reflected in color palette and other accessories. But you can also arrive fully decked out in a screen-accurate Rey costume, the full face paint and lekku of a Twi’lek, or choose to purchase in-world apparel at The Chandrila Collection, the Halcyon starcruiser’s boutique.

The shop hosts a range of exclusive items, from jewelry, pins, and backpacks emblazoned with the Chandrila Star Line logo, to Togruta montrals and Twi’lek lekku, as well as clothing that both looks at home on the ship — a pint-sized captain’s jacket for children and a blue coverall are styled after Captain Keevan and Sammie the mechanic — and on film. Merchandise creators worked closely with Lucasfilm and archivists at Skywalker Ranch to create the prequel-era Padmé Amidala travel cloak — “It’s phenomenal,” says Tracie Alt, the senior manager of brand merchandising — and a green ensemble closely matched to the costume of one of Bail Organa’s aides. Alt notes that although the two pieces based on film costumes repeated the patterns and key elements of the pieces, they weren’t made with the same materials. In reality, Amidala’s cloak has a stiff wax-like detail to form the pattern, which would be uncomfortably heavy to wear for some guests. Instead, the team recreated to look of the fabric with burnout velvet, taking care to ensure it still draped in the same manner as the accessory on screen.

Some items took inspiration from the films but gave it a unique spin. “We looked at images from Canto Bight and from Dryden Vos’s yacht,” Alt says. “What were the shapes? What were the fabrics? What were the colors? And we really infuse a lot of that into those designs.” The Solo: A Star Wars Story villain also inspired the look of the wine glasses that can be purchased onboard.

Other pieces are intended to be taken home and displayed as mementos of the experience, like a variety of Halcyon starcruiser models and miniatures and a customizable Legacy Lightsaber modeled after the Lightsaber Training exercise and a kid’s version that both include Aurebesh letters to add to the hilt. There’s also a shield fabricated to look and feel like the shields in the training activity and various action figures and interactive versions of astromech droid SK-62O.

In each case, the creators behind the consumer products offerings had one goal in mind: ensure that passengers aboard the Halcyon starcruiser felt like they truly belonged among the stars.
